We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Joey Cole a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Joey, thank you so much for making time for us. We’ve always admired your ability to take risks and so maybe we can kick things off with a discussion around how you developed your ability to take and bear risk?
My ability to take risks developed through both necessity and mindset. Several years ago, I found myself driving out of town with my daughter to attend a concert. We spent money on gas, booked a hotel, and bought concert tickets only to realize that many fans who couldn’t travel were missing out on this live experience. At the same time, I noticed that artists weren’t fairly compensated for their music, and concerts weren’t accessible to a wider audience. This became the spark for the idea that eventually turned into the OUTLET APP.
Creating the app was a huge risk, but it was one I felt compelled to take. I had no technical background, so I had to hire a company to develop the app for me. Trusting someone else with my vision and investing in a project with no guaranteed return was intimidating, but the idea that live concerts could be treated like pay-per-view events accessible to fans no matter where they lived kept me motivated.
What helped me develop my ability to take risks was understanding that risks aren’t just about the possibility of failure they’re about the opportunity to innovate, solve problems, and bring meaningful ideas to life. Over time, I learned to embrace uncertainty and see it as a natural part of the process. I focused on the potential impact of the project, not just the challenges.
I also learned that taking calculated risks requires a mindset shift. I had to trust my instincts, rely on the expertise of others, and not be afraid to make mistakes along the way. The more I leaned into discomfort, the more resilient and confident I became in my ability to take risks. And most importantly, I realized that the greatest growth happens when we step outside our comfort zones and embrace the unknown.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
The most exciting and special thing about the OUTLET APP is its ability to bridge the gap between artists and fans in a way that hasn’t been done before, no matter how big your audience is. Artists can also sell audio and video making the app a one-stop shop while transforming concerts into accessible, virtual experiences that fans can enjoy no matter where they are. It allows artists to reach a global audience, ensuring they are compensated fairly within 48 hours while giving fans the opportunity to experience live performances they might not otherwise be able to attend due to location, cost, or other barriers.
What excites me the most is the potential to reshape the live music and entertainment industry, making it more inclusive and accessible. Concerts should be treated like pay-per-view events, where fans pay for the experience, regardless of where the event takes place. With the OUTLET APP, we’re bringing that vision to life. It’s about creating a new way for people to connect with artists and their work, all while supporting them in a sustainable way.
This combination of innovation, accessibility, and fair compensation is what makes the app so special. It’s about changing the way live events are consumed and creating a better experience for both the fans and the artists. The idea that fans everywhere can access exclusive content, audio, video, and support their favorite artists in real time is incredibly rewarding, and it’s something I’m proud to take part in.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back on my journey with the OUTLET APP, there three key qualities and skills that have been especially impactful: resilience, learning to trust others, and developing a growth mindset.
1. Resilience: Creating the OUTLET APP came with many challenges. There were setbacks, doubts, and moments where it felt like things wouldn’t coming together. But the ability to stay resilient in the face of adversity is what kept me going. I learned that failure is part of the process, and that each obstacle offers a valuable lesson. My advice to those early in their journey is to embrace challenges rather than avoid them. Resilience isn’t about never failing it’s about
bouncing back and learning from mistakes.
2. Learning to Trust Others: I knew that building an app was beyond my skill set, so I had to rely on a team of experts to help bring the idea to life. Learning to trust others and collaborate effectively was crucial. There’s a lot of power in recognizing that you don’t have to do everything yourself. My advice here is to surround yourself with people who complement your strengths and skills. Find mentors, advisors, or experts who can guide you and be open to learning from them.
3. Growth Mindset: One of the most important skills I developed was the ability to see every situation good or bad as an opportunity to grow. In entrepreneurship, things move fast, and not everything will go according to plan. Instead of seeing these situations as failures, I learned to adapt and view them as steppingstones toward improvement. For those just starting out, I recommend adopting a growth mindset. Don’t be afraid to experiment, fail, and keep learning. The more you embrace continuous learning, the more you’ll be prepared for success.
For everyone early in their journey, my advice is simple. Stay curious, be resilient in the face of challenges, and trust that every experience weather it’s a success or failure is helping you build the foundation for what’s to come. Keep learning, keep evolving, and remember that growth comes from both successes and setback.
