Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dulceanny Gabin. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Dulceanny, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?
My optimism often stems from self-confidence and trust in my ability to navigate challenging situations and persevere. Rather than feeling discouraged when things don’t go as planned or when difficulties arise, I use such moments as motivation to keep moving forward. Being optimistic many times more than not is something that comes through work. Being aware of our own thoughts and actively engaging with them is something vital in being optimistic; while it might be in our nature to think the worse of things, it is important to be aware of how we word things and what we tell ourselves. By consciously practicing positive self-talk and reframing negative thoughts, we can train our minds to focus on the good rather than the bad. This shift in mindset was what led me to obtain a more optimistic outlook on life. This ongoing effort to improve myself and my perspective has been key in building the self-confidence that fuels my optimism. Ultimately, it is important to remember that optimism is a choice that requires continuous effort and self-awareness.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m a Dominican illustrator and Visual artist. I love creating, in all of its forms.
I prioritize the mood in my pieces above all else.
If I can think back to the reason why I started doing art and the one constant emotion I always seek while creating it, it is the feeling of peace. Finding inner peace and serenity. All throughout my life, this has been the one constant emotion I’ve always chased and the one that I constantly seek to convey in my art.
In this world, I want to provide people with pieces that act as a breath of fresh air. I want my art to serve as a sanctuary for those who view it, a place where they can escape the chaos of everyday life and find solace. I hope that my art can bring a sense of calm and tranquility to those who experience it; I hope those can take a moment to pause and breathe when they engage with my work.
Recently, I became a New York-based artist and have been engaging with more hands-on work and exploring new techniques to develop more alluring pieces.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I believe the most important assets to possess at the start of any journey are a strong sense of self and a clear set of values. For me, qualities such as dedication, responsibility, and above all, honesty, have guided my personal path. In both professional and personal contexts, I have found that dedication and passion can often compensate for a lack of experience. While experience is undoubtedly valuable, it is the drive to learn, adapt, and improve that sets individuals apart. This growth mindset, combined with a strong work ethic, has been key to my journey. My advice to those folks who are early in their journey, whichever it may be, would be to build a strong work ethic and to not lose their sense of self. To thrive, it is also important to have a healthy work-life balance, and I think this is something you can achieve when working on these things.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
As a creative, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed when starting new projects or juggling multiple tasks at once. When I start feeling this way, I find it helpful to break the task down into smaller, more manageable steps. Often, the idea of a project can feel more daunting than the task itself, so taking breaks to clear my mind helps me return to it with a fresh perspective. Talking it out with friends or family can also be a great way to gain new insights and advice on how to handle the situation. Their support often provides a different perspective and offers valuable advice on how to approach the situation. Overall, taking care of yourself and understanding what helps you manage stress is key to handling overwhelming tasks effectively.
