Meet Vencho Wang

We were lucky to catch up with Vencho Wang recently and have shared our conversation below.

Vencho, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?

For me, finding a goal is a continuous process of trial and improvement. I focus on doing my best with everything I undertake and observe which tasks are difficult to excel at despite my efforts, and which ones show significant progress with minimal learning. Through this process, I pause to analyze the reasons behind these patterns, identify my strengths, and set goals around them. As I pursue new goals, I also acquire new skills, continuously experimenting and adjusting to achieve ongoing improvement.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

As an illustrator, I find the unpredictability of watercolor to be its most captivating quality. The fluidity of water creates unexpected effects in every piece, making each painting a unique journey. I often work on two paintings simultaneously, not only to explore more possibilities but also to teach myself to embrace “mistakes” in the creative process and find joy in them.

When it comes to teaching, what touches me the most are my students. Throughout the challenges of managing and growing my art studio, my students, who come from all walks of life, have been incredibly supportive. Some have shared valuable insights on marketing strategies, others have guided me in organizing my finances, and many have offered professional advice that has been instrumental in overcoming obstacles. I am deeply grateful for their help, and these connections have transformed my studio into a space filled with collaboration and mutual support.

Looking ahead, I plan to introduce iwa-enogu (mineral pigment) painting courses. This art form, originating from the Buddhist murals of Dunhuang’s ancient caves in China, involves creating artwork with pigments made from ground minerals. While this technique was nearly lost over centuries, Japan has preserved and refined it into a contemporary practice. Today, it represents a unique blend of Eastern artistry that remains largely unknown in the Western world. All the materials must be imported from Asia, and I hope to bring this beautiful and ancient art form to London. I anticipate significant challenges in marketing and introducing it to a new audience, but I am excited to see how far I can take it.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Don’t chase perfection too rigidly. Focus on consistency and allow yourself the space to make mistakes and adjust along the way. While you may not always achieve your original plans exactly as envisioned, the process often leads to unexpected and rewarding discoveries.

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?

When I first arrived in the UK, a friend provided me with incredible support. At a time when I was unfamiliar with the language and culture, he encouraged me and helped me take small steps toward trying new things. As I started achieving small successes, I gradually gained confidence in my ability to face life’s challenges.

This friend taught me not to fear failure and helped me believe that any challenge can be overcome with courage and persistence. I am deeply grateful to have met someone like him on my life journey. His support has given me the confidence I now carry to face both life and work.
