We recently connected with Mazaria and have shared our conversation below.
MaZaria, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
My resilience comes from my experiences & reflection of experiences. The environments where resilience thrives the most are challenging ones where I have to rely on my flexibility & open-mindedness. Resilience is prominent in determination in the unknown.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Movement is my passion, my purpose, and my hope. It has a pull on my soul, driving me to work, train, teach, and research more about it every day. I strive to stay connected and deepen my knowledge because the dance community is like a vast pool—it goes deeper and deeper the more you explore.
I currently teach and choreograph a multitude of styles, including ballroom, acrobatics, and ballet, for a wide range of students of all ages—even wedding couples. Beyond the dance itself, this path is incredibly rewarding because I get to assist others in finding ways to improve themselves—skills they can continue to build upon throughout their lives.
In addition to teaching, I’m also a performer. I’ve had the opportunity to work at events such as the Ankara Festival, Club Jete, Choreographer’s Carnival, and at the Barnsdall Gallery Theatre. The most exciting part of this journey is the experiences and the artists I’ve had the chance to meet along the way.
Now, I will say it can be a challenge to find those you truly connect with, but once you do, you cherish those connections. As for what’s next, I plan to create a couple of dance films to get my creative juices flowing again and to inspire myself. I always enjoy learning more about who I am—especially when I’m doing what I love.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three qualities that I think are most important to utilize are resilience, faith, and self-awareness. Resilience is vital because the path is unpredictable. We can plan and assume all we want, but God’s plan is bigger, more vital, and purposeful for the season we’re in.
Following that, my faith is my greatest quality because I believe I wouldn’t have the courage to follow what’s in my heart without it. Everything I’ve gone through since moving to Los Angeles has not been easy, but the Creator—the one who knows all, gave me grace when I made mistakes, and watches over me even in the valleys—offers me security, faith, and trust.
Lastly, the quality I cannot live without, especially on this journey, is being myself, staying self-aware, and humbling myself for self-improvement. Getting started is always the toughest part because you don’t know what the outcome will be. However, remember that all you can do is try, problem-solve, and follow through with yourself. No one is going to fully understand your journey at first, and you probably won’t either. However, having a constant—like faith, journaling, meditating, or reading a book—can help you navigate this journey.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
Of course! Connecting with others in my career path is a key focus in making it a sustainable career. I identify as a movement artist, a freestyler, and a multi-faceted mover of many styles. In addition, I’ve produced my own live experimental show, directed my own dance film, and created a short film. Overall, I’m a creative with a passion for movement.
