Meet Izzy Acquie

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Izzy Acquie. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Izzy below.

Izzy , we are so deeply grateful to you for opening up about your journey with mental health in the hopes that it can help someone who might be going through something similar. Can you talk to us about your mental health journey and how you overcame or persisted despite any issues? For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.

Mental health is an important topic for me. It’s mostly at the forefront of many conversations I have. Growing up mental health issues weren’t talked about, although I knew of the symptoms and signs to look for having experience family members whom silently suffered. I’ve always wondered why couldn’t they just talk about it and get help? As an adult I see now that it wasn’t that simple nor easy. We have come along way with the importance of mental health and what it means to be able to seek help. I feel fortunate that in todays age, there are so many resources. That’s what keeps me going, knowing that I am not alone. That I don’t have to suffer in silence and that I have options! These options weren’t available back then as there are now. Just knowing I have a support system whether it’s family and friends or advocacy programs that keep me motivated to push through those tough mental days.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

The Free spirit of my family, I left Brooklyn to serve in the United States Navy. Having been working as a freelance makeup artist in NYC my friends thought I would not make it in the military (neither did I to be honest). It was the best decision of my life. Everything in life brought me to where I am today! This exact moment! There’s been lots of hard times, but it’s just made me stronger! The path I’ve chosen has led me to meet so many amazing people like you! When you support me and my business, you are supporting a Veteran and Special Needs family.
As a special needs mom to a Magically-abled son living with Cerebral Palsy, it was important for me to embody the magic that he brings to my life (& this world) to what I do. Izzy’s Apothecary was born to spread awareness on Veteran, Mental Health, & Disabled persons advocacy. Experience the magic with self care items, intention candles, eclectic nostalgic crafts and ritual aids to aid in manifestations. Izzy’s Apothecary also hosts community based event fundraisers through themed events to aid families affected by natural disasters, medical difficulties, & homelessness.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Looking back the most important trait to have in this business is empathy. You’re either born with it or you’re not. Being in tune with your emotions and surrounding, as well as others around you is such a gift. I always say it can be a gift or a curse, it’s a constant learning curve. The spiritual aspects of my business attracts magic seekers from all different realms of life. People looking for an answer, a solution, hope! One must be equipped with the ability to have an open mind and heart to allow yourself grace in everyone’s individual needs without giving a false sense of hope. Manifestations are unique to every person and they must harness the power within to achieve their goals. I simply aid individuals in achieving a sense of higher self and finding their inner light. It can be difficult if goals or persons don’t align with your goals and path to a better self. You need to be able to take a stand and communicate even when it’s not the easiest.

Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?

You should go all in on your strengths. I strongly believe this is a better route than being well rounded. Once you go all in on your strengths you will have more time for improving what you may not be as strong in as opposed to the other way around. If you try to improve what you’re not as good in, you’re taking time away from what you’re good at. There is always room for improvement, so why not manage your time focusing on your area of expertise. I originally started out as a candle business in 2017 and took the leap to venture out to skin care and intention tools in 2019. As an apothecary business I have room to be more creative than if I had taken a different route to strictly be a business with a focus on one product type. I love variety because it challenges me. When I want to learn a new craft I have room to do so. I’m also an artist based off emotions. What I mean is, if I feel a certain way or a particular feeling, mentally I’d want to focus on an item specifically to how I feel. This explains alot of my sassy and quirky labels. My approach is, if I feel this way, I’m sure others do too. And that’s what I base my products off of. Being well rounded is a bonus once you have established your strengths.
