Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Juni Calluna. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Juni, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
I often find myself stuck in writer’s block or drained creatively for ideas when trying to produce. To combat this I try to stop whatever it is I’m stuck on, whether that be writing a song, coming up with a drum part, etc. and I try to work on something else. If I’m really stumped I find that sitting down and pumping all the bad ideas I have out really helps find some gems to build off of. I also find that stepping away is sometimes the best answer, I think the majority of my songs have come from random ideas that sparked while driving around or on a night out with friends. I think it’s best to step out of the studio and experience life to come up with material, it could be a something you hear someone say or a vibe or feeling you catch while out and about.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My love for music and writing came from going out to local shows around my hometown in my teens. The scene was active in my hometown in California with many bands exploring genres like shoe gaze, indie, hardcore, punk, etc. Me and my friends would go out almost every weekend and I knew by then I wanted to start making music. We started our own band as I was entering college studying music and spent the next few years playing around at local venues and house parties, I eventually split off to move to Seattle and started working on my own music and learning how to produce. As the years have past I feel like I’m just finally started to get a clear vision of what my sound is and how I want to be seen as an artist, it feels like my journey is just barely starting and I’m excited to see where I can go.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I would say discipline, perseverance and passion are the three qualities that helped me the most so far. Music is extremely delicate and vulnerable, it’s hard to write a song and put it out in the world laying out all of your emotions and hard work on the table for everyone to see and honestly sometimes the reaction isn’t always what you want, especially when you are first starting. Staying disciplined and making sure you are constantly evaluating yourself and your skills is important to grow as a musician, whether that’s your instrumentals, vocals, or songwriting skills you must be consistent and continue to challenge yourself otherwise you face a plateau. Perseverance and passion are also needed to press forward, in today’s age music takes a lot of investment in time and money and often with no reward. To create and play music you gotta love it whether you’re making an earning or not.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I would love to collaborate with any videographers, directors, photographers, or other artists/producers. I’m always looking for more creatives to work with, you can contact me best through my instagram @juni_calluna!
