We recently connected with Sarap Fresh and have shared our conversation below.
Hi SaRap, so happy to have you on the platform and I think our readers are in for a treat because you’ve got such an interesting story and so much insight and wisdom. So, let’s start with a topic that is relevant to everyone, regardless of industry etc. What do you do for self-care and how has it impacted you?
My self-care routine is ever evolving, but it now is centralized around balance. It started with my discovery of fitness via the gym, not knowing what I wanted when I was young I found myself in jobs that weren’t in alignment with who I was, but going to the gym restored my balance physically and emotionally which allowed me to continue my journey of self-discovery uncovering my true passions, such as music and performing. Looking back, as I grew more as person it was vital for my self-care routine to grow more as well. In 2020 during the height of covid, with stress levels high, both in the external world and my internal one I desperately needed something to balance out not only my physical and emotional, but my mental as well and that’s when my wife introduced me to meditation. We started out doing just 5-8 min of guided meditations, which is when I became aware of how scattered and chaotic my mind had become, this practice allowed me to start each day with somewhat of clean slate and not drag so much mental and emotional chaos from the previous day into a new one. I now no longer need guidance and meditate for 15-20 min every morning. I credit mediation as a door to unlocking awareness of myself mentally and emotionally on a much deeper level. In doing so it has spawned me to make dramatic changes in my life towards becoming more balanced. I started playing basketball again and occasionally Super Mario, as these were things that linked me to my childhood and I found joy in, as well as getting out in nature, which started out just as walking outside to ultimately relocating to be near the ocean where I’m able to connect with water on a daily basis whether that’s going to the beach or driving over bridges and seeing the ocean. This balance is very important, if I sway too far one way whether working too much, gyming too much, spending too much time thinking about music, I become out of balance and inevitably neglecting something else, which leads to fatigue and exhaustion. It is in the balance that I find myself most happy in the present moment, which is connected directly to my mind, body, spirit haramony, which is my definition of self-care for me.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I create magical hip-hop songs to express my ever growing mental landscape, which reflects the view point of myself and the world at a given moment when they’re created. I enjoy the process of gathering a beat, thanks to all the beat makers out there, and doing a verbal dance with the beat. I sit with a notebook, let go, and wait for the magic to strike, while the beat is playing. When I’m not thinking and empty eventually the first line will come, and thus I’m tapped in, I begin to write a song one line after another. It’s after it’s written that I’m able to decipher what the messaging behind the song is, in the same way the listener does, it’s not a premeditated process but rather a feeling and natural self-expression. I release a new song at least once a month on all streaming platforms and I’m most excited to see my evolving passions emerge within my music, such as my growing spirituality and love for wine – Cheers!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Three skills that I know have helped me along the way are courage, acceptance, and patience. It takes courage to express yourself authentically in a world dominated with expectations. It takes acceptance to know it’s ok whether others get it or not, making art is about expressing yourself authentically, and in doing so you give others permission to as well. It takes patience most of all, have patience with yourself, life is a journey that will test you if you have the courage to be your authentic self. There will be much growth, accept that this growth may be painful, but with patience and faith “this too shall pass.”
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
My biggest area of growth has been taking steps to become aware of the subconscious baggage I have been carrying around that no longer serves me and releasing it. Imposter syndrome or fear may have helped me survive in the past when I didn’t know who I was or have the courage to choose to find out, but I do now and no longer need to check that baggage. Wherever the flight takes me I’ll be fine 🙂
