We recently connected with Dan Neary and have shared our conversation below.
Dan , so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
Stepping onstage for the first time was definitely a key part of developing my confidence. I was a shy, quiet high schooler and music really opened so many doors for me. I joined my first band in high school, formed a lot of great friendships and relationships as well.
Every time I set foot on a stage in front of an audience, I grew…… When I perform music/play guitar, whether its in my home alone or onstage front of 500 people, I go into a zone. I’m able to tap into a different side of myself, a side that only music truly brings out. The energy I put forth, people would respond to and appreciate.
I really started to get more and more motivation as I saw myself progressing, playing to more and more, and on larger and larger stages as time went on. Being able to put something into the world that people enjoy, something that makes their night better, even if its just temporary. That can be a driving force. I still try to bring that same enthusiasm and excitement to everything I do.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m a touring guitarist from New Jersey. I currently perform with the pop cover act ‘ The Event Horizon’ We play some of the top clubs and events along the East Coast. I play in 10 states and perform about 250 shows a year. I also play guitar for the Pop/Rock artist Lisa Bouchelle, and sub in for many other acts. I’m incredibly lucky to be able to do what I do and am thankful for the opportunities. My goals are to perform everywhere I can, and to keep growing. I’m always looking for new endeavors and try to play with everyone I can. My goals for the future are to put together a touring tribute act and to keep growing…. Although I’m primarily a rock guitarist, I’m in influenced by music in general, all types of genres. I love taking on challenges and going outside of my comfort zone, but still bringing my flavor to whatever I tackle. Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Showing up, being friendly and doing your homework.
Be prepared, try different projects, and be nice to everyone ( you never know what kind of connections you’re making and who knows who)
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
They let me follow my passion and supported it. I couldn’t ask for more.
