We were lucky to catch up with Leronda London recently and have shared our conversation below.
Leronda, thanks for taking the time to share your lessons with our community today. So, let’s jump right in – one of the most essential skills for unlocking our potential is self-discipline. Where does your self-discipline come from?
My self-discipline comes from being raised in church at a very young age. My mother would send me to church with my grandmother on Sundays, because she often worked. I watched my grandmother faithful read her Bible and talk about the Lord. We attended many church events.
This was a stepping stone to create self-discipline for me. It has always stuck with me. I’ve always tried to do things the right way not my way. I’m not perfect, but I believe in myself.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
First off, I’m a Paraprofessional at my day job, which means I work in a school setting with children that are Autistic & have disabilities. I’ve done this for 25+ years and I absolutely enjoy it!
My other passion is working my small business, which is Ronda’s Royal Treats & Treasures. This is my baby, created by me! During Covid, I went to the kitchen one day to dip some chocolate covered strawberries and posted them on Facebook. I received great comments and it started from there. I was like…hmmm, I think I’m on to something! I went through the steps of getting a business license etc. I started watching videos on how to create other treats and went from there. I actually joined groups for beginners to add to my business.
The Treasures of my business are my T-shirts, mugs, caps, hats & coasters.
Yes, I do it all.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
For me, I loved watching my mom and grandmother in the kitchen making desserts do it was always in me to add my own thing to it , in a sense. I inherited my skills naturally from them. I loved looking at other treat-makers work to see if I could do as well as them. I’m always my biggest critic, of course.
My advice is not to give up! It takes time when you’re on your journey. As they say nothing happens over night. I’ve been in business for four years and I’m also still learning. I’m home based and want to keep it this way, simply because I have other things that I’m working on. This way I can set my own time.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
My sister, Erika Stokes Granger has been my person. She’s the owner of her own brand as well, Neckoloy101. She’s stuck by me and helped me. The skills and knowledge from her has really helped me when I felt stuck or needed to improve in areas.
I’m not 100% where I want to be, but I know it does take time and I will get there.
