We recently connected with Roxxy Haze and have shared our conversation below.
Roxxy, thank you so much for making time for us. We’ve always admired your ability to take risks and so maybe we can kick things off with a discussion around how you developed your ability to take and bear risk?
My ability to take risks was heavily influenced by my father. He instilled in me the importance of always trying, no matter how uncertain the outcome. My dad was a college professor, but he also had a passion for acting. He wrote, produced, and directed his own plays, and pursued acting later in life. Watching him take those bold steps and reinvent himself showed me the value of stepping outside your comfort zone and following your passions. His encouragement and example have always been a driving force in my willingness to take risks and try new things.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Hi, I’m Roxxy Haze! I’m a comedian, writer, rapper, gamer, content creator, and all-around nerd who loves creating and connecting with people. Originally from Houston and now based in Los Angeles, I’ve been lucky to do what I love on platforms like All Def, OWN, Amazon Prime, and BET. I’ve had the honor of working with amazing talents like KevOnStage, Tony Baker, and Tahir Moore, as well as collaborating with industry icons like Carl Jones, working on Nickelodeon projects, and writing jokes for Comedy Central’s *Bring Back Laughs*.
As a content creator, I love blending comedy, nostalgia, and nerd culture to create fun, relatable videos for my social media platforms. Whether it’s discussing childhood cartoons, creating hilarious skits, or nerdy unboxings, I’m always looking for ways to entertain and connect with my audience.
I also host an audio-only podcast called *The Roxxy Haze Podcast*, where I dive into a variety of topics that I’m passionate about. It’s a space where I explore everything from geek culture and personal stories to creativity, mental health, and the pursuit of self-expression. I also feature special episodes that revive past podcast concepts like *Bedtime Bitchin’*, where I rank my favorite and least favorite things about specific topics, and *Tell Me a Story*, where I share funny or heartfelt unscripted stories from my life. The podcast is super casual and fun, offering a little glimpse into my world and the things I love.
I’m also really passionate about music and writing. I’ve released books like *playing with fire*, a poetry collection, and *Unprovoked: Words Nobody Asked For*, a book full of funny thoughts. My next project, a comedic guidebook, comes out in 2025. On the music side, I’ve dropped nerdcore tracks like *Wii Party* and *Come Along with Me* and can’t wait to share my new anime-inspired EP, *Never Knows Best*, early next year. I even play the ukulele and am excited to keep growing musically.
Performing live is one of my favorite things to do. I got to showcase nerd-inspired comedy at DreamCon 2024, perform rap at BlerdCon 2023, and join DreamBash in LA with Seth Smith, a great community for Black nerds (blerds). I’m also gearing up for my comedy tour, where I’ll be bringing my whimsical, stream-of-consciousness style to the stage and connecting with audiences in person.
I’m so excited to keep growing my social media platforms, meeting more amazing people, and spreading the message of self-love and expression. I’m also a big advocate for literacy and love volunteering in that space to help my community. Through my work—whether it’s content creation, comedy, books, music, or my podcast—I hope to inspire others to embrace who they are and chase their dreams. Let’s keep building something amazing together!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, the three most impactful qualities in my journey have been confidence, work ethic, and a sense of wonder.
Confidence has been crucial. I had to believe in myself and my skills, even when I didn’t feel completely ready. If I wasn’t confident, I practiced and trained until I was. That meant going to open mics, working out, reading, learning, and putting in the work to improve. Confidence isn’t something you’re born with; it’s something you build through preparation and persistence. My advice is to start where you are—don’t wait until you feel “ready,” because you never will. Just take that first step and trust that you’ll grow with experience.
Work ethic is another cornerstone of my success. I was raised by a single father who instilled in me the value of hard work. He taught me that nothing worth having comes easy, and I carry that with me in everything I do. I always tell myself, “Nobody is going to outwork me.” It’s about pushing yourself to keep going, even when it’s hard. I pretend I’m Goku from Dragon Ball Z—constantly training and striving to get stronger. My advice? Cultivate discipline, set goals, and show up for yourself every single day.
Lastly, my sense of wonder has been a driving force. When we’re kids, we naturally have this sense of wonder. Everything is new and exciting, and we’re always curious to explore and figure things out. But as we get older, life’s bad experiences, rejection, or setbacks can beat that sense of wonder out of us. Don’t lose that spark! Keep exploring, keep learning, and keep trying new things. My love for discovery has helped me navigate different spaces and take risks without fear. My advice is to embrace your curiosity. Let it guide you and open up opportunities you never imagined.
To anyone starting their journey: believe in yourself, put in the work, and hold onto that childlike sense of wonder. Those three things—confidence, work ethic, and wonder—will take you further than you ever thought possible.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
My biggest area of growth in the past 12 months has been in planning and collaborating more effectively. I’ve started to embrace asking for help, identifying my strengths and weaknesses, and building a community of peers. This shift has been transformative, especially since I have ADHD, which has made time management a challenge for me. I’ve struggled with things like time blindness, anxiety around events, and being late, which can come across as unprofessional. These were real hurdles for me, but I’ve been working on strategies to improve.
One of the most impactful changes has been time-blocking and giving myself grace and space for distractions and downtime. It’s not perfect—I’m still not always on time—but it’s been a game changer. I’ve also started using tools like the “Four Quarters Method,” which involves breaking the day into four parts and focusing on specific types of work in each quarter. Practicing mindfulness and celebrating small wins has helped me feel less overwhelmed and more grounded.
Another big area of growth has been building a supportive community. I’ve connected with peers who hold each other accountable, share resources, and collaborate on projects. This has not only made me feel more supported but has also opened up opportunities to perform, grow, and create alongside others. It’s been incredible, and I want to continue fostering these connections and building my network.
On a personal level, I’ve been focusing on financial stability, which has significantly reduced stress and allowed me to carve out more time for the things that matter—like spending time with family, friends, my dog, and simply relaxing. This balance has been so important for my overall well-being.
Every day is a work in progress, but I’m proud of how far I’ve come and excited to keep improving and growing in all areas of my life.
