We were lucky to catch up with Tabnie Dozier recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tabnie, so glad you were able to set aside some time for us today. We’ve always admired not just your journey and success, but also the seemingly high levels of self-discipline that you seem to have mastered and so maybe we can start by chatting about how you developed it or where it comes from?
My self-discipline comes from the promise I made to myself once I left the corporate realm to never settle for a life I don’t deserve. I’ve watched so many women in my family and in my network choose spouses, locations, job titles and situations that didn’t serve them or were beneath them and enter into a space of complacency. I refuse to follow that same cycle.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I story tell and consult for a living! My dynamic media and marketing agency, Tabnie Dozier Enterprises is the vessel to share my journalistic and marketing expertise. What is most thrilling for me is the fact that I no longer have to report horrific headlines and destruction. Clients hire me and my team for positive press only, which is awesome. We offer public speaking and media training, visual and written storytelling production, crisis communication, press release distribution, event planning and MC duties, creative direction and more.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three important qualities that were most impactful in my journey are self-discipline, patience and determination. Life rarely goes the way we want it to. There are obstacles and instances beyond our control. Everything from our bags being lost while traveling to natural disasters, unexpected losses and deaths can turn our worlds upside down. I choose to focus on what I can control, like my physical well-being, mental health stability, supporting non-profits, and operating a business of integrity that produces spectacular deliverables. I come from a space as a public figure where people are incredibly judgmental and extend their opinions far more than necessary. If I wasn’t following self-discipline, I’d be easily influenced or impacted by others. If I didn’t extend patience towards my clients, myself, or my staff, I’d make hasty and unorganized decisions or lose quality business relationships by moving too quickly. Without determination, I’d give up at the slightest inconvenience or setback, I’d let this dream of independent storytelling and freedom slip away.
To others who are desiring an exit from the corporate realm, to monetize on their talents, or begin a new hobby or educational endeavor, it takes work to be disciplined, patient and determined. Don’t run from obstacles, don’t ingest everyone’s ideas and opinions and surely don’t suppress those small voices that magnify the desires of your heart.

Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
The biggest obstacle in my path right now is securing business investors and funding. A recent article by J.P Morgan (https://www.jpmorgan.com/insights/business/business-planning/black-women-are-the-fastest-growing-group-of-entrepreneurs-but-the-job-isnt-easy.#:~:text=In%20the%20U.S.%2C%2017%25%20of,and%2015%25%20of%20White%20men.&text=Motives%20for%20creating%20a%20new,income%20or%20following%20a%20dream.) lists Black women entrepreneurs as the fastest growing demographic but the least invested. It goes on to discuss how 61% of Black women self-fund their startup capital where just 29% of them live in households with incomes over $75,000, compared to 52% of White men.
Black business owners who apply for funding have a rejection rate that is three times higher than that of White business owners, and they are more likely to identify access to credit as a challenge. This is my life over the past three years as a business owner. I am over-mentored and under-funded. TDE has been rejected from more than 65 agencies offering grants, fellowships and potential angel investors.
I’ll have to get back to you about how we’re overcoming this challenge because we have not yet defeated this monster of white supremacy, bias and lack of access to critical resources. I lean tremendously on my faith and my awesome team that continues to apply to grants month after month. It only takes one ‘yes’ to provide the long-term financial stability that we desire and deserve.
