We caught up with the brilliant and insightful De’Marcos Blow a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi De’Marcos, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
Throughout my life, I’ve had the opportunity to develop my confidence and self-esteem through various experiences and challenges. Growing up, I was a shy and introverted individual who struggled to express myself and assert my opinions. However, as I entered the military at a young age, I was thrust into a world of uncertainty and adversity that forced me to confront my fears and push beyond my comfort zone.
During my 20-year military career, I had the opportunity to take on various leadership roles, participate in rigorous training programs, and overcome numerous challenges that tested my physical and mental limits. With each success and accomplishment, I began to develop a sense of pride and self-worth that helped to boost my confidence and self-esteem.
One of the most significant experiences that contributed to my growth was my time as a leading culinary specialist in the Navy. In this role, I was responsible for managing and supervising a team of culinary personnel, as well as training and mentoring junior sailors in culinary skills and safety protocols. The sense of responsibility and trust that was placed in me helped to build my confidence and self-esteem, and I began to see myself as a capable and competent leader.
In addition to my military experiences, I’ve also had the opportunity to participate in various personal development programs and workshops that have helped me to build my self-awareness, self-acceptance, and self-confidence. These experiences have taught me the importance of self-reflection, self-care, and self-compassion, and have helped me to develop a more positive and empowering mindset.
Today, I can confidently say that I am a strong and capable individual with a healthy sense of self-esteem and confidence. I am proud of my accomplishments and experiences, and I am excited to continue growing and developing as a person. I believe that my confidence and self-esteem will serve me well in my future endeavors, and I am eager to take on new challenges and pursue my passions with enthusiasm and purpose.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
As a seasoned baker and business owner, I can attest that the following three qualities, skills, and areas of knowledge have been instrumental in my journey:
1. Creativity and Innovation
Developing my creativity and innovation skills has allowed me to stay ahead of the curve in the competitive baking industry. By experimenting with new recipes, ingredients, and presentation styles, I’ve been able to differentiate my business and attract a loyal customer base.
2. Business Acumen and Financial Management
Understanding the financial aspects of running a business has been crucial to my success. From managing cash flow and inventory to pricing and marketing, having a solid grasp of business principles has enabled me to make informed decisions and drive growth.
3. Customer Service and Relationship-Building
Fostering strong relationships with my customers has been vital to building a loyal customer base and driving word-of-mouth referrals. By actively listening to customer feedback, being responsive to their needs, and consistently delivering high-quality products and services, I’ve been able to establish trust and loyalty with my customers.
Advice for Early-Stage Entrepreneurs
For those early in their journey, I offer the following advice:
• Develop your creativity and innovation skills: Experiment with new recipes, ingredients, and techniques. Stay up-to-date with industry trends and best practices.
• Invest in business education and training: Take courses or workshops on business management, finance, and marketing. Seek mentorship from experienced entrepreneurs.
• Focus on building strong customer relationships: Listen actively to customer feedback, respond promptly to their needs, and consistently deliver high-quality products and services.
By focusing on these key areas, you’ll be well on your way to building a successful baking business that attracts and retains loyal customers.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
Here’s a sample statement:
“The most impactful thing my mother did for me as a food service business owner was instilling in me a passion for baking and cooking, and teaching me the value of hard work, dedication, and attention to detail. Growing up, I watched her work tirelessly in our family’s bakery, creating delicious treats that brought joy to our community. She taught me the importance of using only the freshest ingredients, of taking pride in every aspect of the business, and of always putting the customer first.
But what had the most profound impact on me was her unwavering support and encouragement. She believed in me, even when I didn’t believe in myself, and pushed me to pursue my dreams. When I decided to start my own food service business, she was my rock, offering guidance, advice, and a listening ear whenever I needed it.
Her legacy will always live on through my business, and I strive every day to make her proud. I hope to carry on her tradition of excellence, community involvement, and love for the culinary arts, and to inspire future generations of food service professionals.”
