Barbara, it’s so good to be connecting again, this time to discuss one of your favorite books. So – let’s jump right in, can you tell us about The Cilantro Diaries: Business Lessons From the Most Unlikely Places – what should our readers know about this book?
This book is the story of Lorenzo Gomez III, told from his own perspective, and his ladder of success from HEB grocery store stock room to eventually the board room. It’s funny yet very inspiring, with a focus on his tips for accomplishment through hope and hard work.
Wonderful, so can you talk to us in more detail about why this book resonates with you?
As the owner of a Texas-based brand myself, this book was especially interesting to me because the story is largely set in HEB. At the time I was reading the book, I was beginning my professional relationship with HEB as a new brand on their shelves, so it not only gave me some entrepreneurial inspirations, it also gave me a unique perspective (and more good things to say) about HEB.
After reading the book, if you had to boil it down to one key take-away, what would it be?
This is a true example of two of my favorite sayings: “the harder you work, the luckier you get” and “you’re going to be thinking anyway, you might as well think big”.
Have you read other books from Lorenzo Gomez III? If so, which others do you recommend and can you tell us a bit about those?
I have not yet read Lorenzo’s other book, Tafolla Toro: Three Years of Fear, which appears to focus on overcoming inner struggles most of us face at various stages of life, but since this question has come up, I’m inspired to do so!
