Adreon Patterson discusses Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler

We’re excited to chat with Adreon Patterson about Parable of the Sower. Check out our conversation below.

Adreon, it’s so good to be connecting again, this time to discuss one of your favorite books. So – let’s jump right in, can you tell us about Parable of the Sower – what should our readers know about this book?
It is a dystopian, post-apocalyptic novel telling the story of a young woman named Lauren Olamina, who faces a series of unfortunate events as a dictator-like president takes control. Her empathetic sense allows her and a group of various individuals to set out on a journey to a better land while learning of her new faith-based system called Earthseed.

Great, so maybe you can get into a bit more detail about why this book feels relevant to you and perhaps you can touch on any lessons or insights that resonated with you?
Bulter’s foresight and elaborate storytelling make this a must-read for any science fiction or Aforfuturism reader. Given recent events regarding the presidential election, it is as if the author had some insight into the mind of humanity.

What themes stood out to you most and were there any perspectives or insights that you felt have helped you expand your worldview?
The importance of community, racism, classism, and nostalgia helped me to understand what happens when certain sects of society’s fears push marginalized groups to seek solace and community together.

How did you discover this book?
I got into Octavia Bulter’s work after one of my professors recommended reading the book as I worked on a written piece with similar themes.

Where do you get your work ethic from?

We’ve all heard the phrase “work hard, play hard,” but where does our work ethic
