Hi Kassandra , so happy to have you on the platform and I think our readers are in for a treat because you’ve got such an interesting story and so much insight and wisdom. So, let’s start with a topic that is relevant to everyone, regardless of industry etc. What do you do for self-care and how has it impacted you?

I think with entrepreneurship; it often feels like there are many things that are out of your control. For example, it can be hard to predict how your target audience may react to a new offering or marketing campaign. It is also impossible to know which piece of content will resonate with your audience. In a world with so many uncertainties, I felt it important to focus on something that I could control and that “something” was developing a routine to allow time for self-care. Self-care can mean many things to different people. For me, it is heavily focused on carving out time to work out. When I can consistently work out, it appears everything else falls in place. I focused on developing a routine that includes working out early in the morning before I start the other parts of my day where I must deliver for other people. On a good a day, I start my work out between 5:15 am and 5:30 am and end between 6:00 am and 6:15 am. This gives me time to accomplish a personal goal daily. Doing this also required me to focus on creating an evening routine that allows me to get to bed at a decent time so that I can get up early. This has helped my overall effectiveness by helping me get more restful sleep which allows me to have more energy and clarity throughout the day.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I am a sports and entertainment attorney in the Washington D.C. metro area. I am licensed in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and New York. I have a solo law practice, The Law Office of Kassandra Ramsey, P.L.L.C., where I assist entrepreneurs, athletes, entertainers, and social media influencers with navigating the ins and outs of creating and running a business and protecting their brands. I assist clients with contract drafting and contract negotiations. I also assist clients with obtaining federal trademark protection with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. This work is fulfilling as I am able to help small business owners see the value in their intellectual property and take the necessary steps to protect their intellectual property.

Additionally, I am an advocate for college athletes’ rights. I have written extensively on college athletes’ name, image, and likeness (NIL) rights. While NIL has created new opportunities for college and high school athletes to become entrepreneurs, it has also increased the need for access to resources to assist with understanding and navigating NIL deals. I work to provide these resources. I operate a blog, “NIL with The Esquire Coach” where I cover the latest in college sports and NIL news. I also produce a local television and YouTube show, “Court-2-Court with The Esquire Coach” where I cover the latest in NIL and college sports news. I also interview sports industry professionals and athletes as they share their experiences in the sports industry and as an athlete. Additionally, I provide NIL education seminars where I discuss important points to understand when reviewing a NIL contract and the role and importance of intellectual property to a college athlete. This work is exciting and fulfilling as I get to ensure current and prospective college athletes have a basic understanding of NIL and the relevant legal topics so that they may get the most out of their NIL opportunities and use those opportunities as launch pads for life after sports.

In my effort to ensure that current and prospective college athletes and their parents have access to as many resources as possible, I am launching a course on NIL and the current state of college athletics. This course will be available to college sports industry professionals, attorneys, sports agents, parents, or anyone who would like to learn about NIL and how to assist college and high school athletes with NIL and the collegiate athlete experience. This course will cover what NIL is, NIL policies and state laws, how to review NIL contracts, and other changes taking place in college athletics. To receive more information about this course and its launch date sign up for my weekly newsletter and receive a complimentary NIL Contract Checklist. There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

1. The skill that has been the most impactful in my journey is writing. I have always enjoyed writing. While I was studying for the Bar Exam, I received an opportunity to write for a sports news website ran by a retired NFL player. With that opportunity, I began advocating for college athletes’ rights. At the time, Alston v. NCAA was in litigation. I wrote extensively about that case. California also passed the first law seeking to give college athletes the right to profit from their name, image, and likeness. Writing about these issues led to opportunities to discuss these issues on various podcasts and TV shows. It ultimately led to me writing the speech for the NFL player I was writing for to testify before Congress regarding NIL for college athletes.

2. My most impactful quality is perseverance. I did not pass the Bar Exam the first time. I was determined that test was not going to stop me from realizing my childhood dream of becoming a lawyer. I was determined that one test was not going to outweigh all of the hard work that I did to get into law school and to make it through law school. Through my determination and hard work, I passed the Bar Exam and I am now licensed in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and New York. Perseverance is my most impactful quality because I believe that type of persistence, diligence, and determination is what is needed to make it as an entrepreneur.

3. I have been studying the business of college sports and advocating for college athletes’ rights for over 10 years and I believe that is my most impactful area of knowledge. I have amassed a wealth of information regarding college athletics and NIL that has led to opportunities to speak and share my knowledge with others allowing me to meet new people and expand my network.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?

Two people have been the most helpful in helping me overcome challenges. Those two people are my mom and my husband. They both support me immensely and encourage me to keep going, which any entrepreneur knows you sometimes need the encouragement. I mentioned earlier that writing was my most impactful skill. I attribute my proficiency in writing to my mom. Starting early in my education, my mom took the time to make sure I could write well. That time put in has paid dividends for me. My husband is a constant sounding board for me throughout my entrepreneurial journey and is always supportive of me and my pursuits.
