We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jordan Smith. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jordan below.
Jordan, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
I have been over 6 feet tall since I was 13 years old and am now 6 foot 4 inches tall. As a woman, this has caused extreme difficulties in many aspects of life. The biggest challenges have been dating and confidence but most importantly has been clothing. I have had to buy men’s clothing to get pants that are long enough, had clothing made for me and more often simply settled for ill-fitting clothes. As a young woman who grew up in a conservative small town, shorts and skirts were never long enough so I was forced to wear clothing that wasn’t in style for my age and caused me embarrassment and low self-confidence. Sports really helped me with my confidence and I leaned in hard to sportswear. I wore men’s tee shirts and basketball shorts and settled for jeans in the men’s department. As I started to get more interested in boys, I wanted a more feminine look so took to sewing classes to learn to make clothes that fit my body. Over the years, athletics helped me learn that being tall was very helpful and that my body was strong and beautiful. It took many years and maturity to realize that people’s opinions or mean comments had nothing to do with me. I now am able to help women with the clothing challenge and it gives me so much joy to hear that women all around the world find joy and confidence wearing my tall clothing brand.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
There is a huge underserved market for women over 5’10 who need clothing that fits properly, and I am passionate about providing those women with clothing that fits. Dealing with ill-fitting clothing for my entire life has given be the drive and passion to help other women feel confident in themselves through clothing. I used to think that my body was the problem, but there is nothing like putting on a piece of clothing that is made for tall women that makes you feel so amazing! A simple maxi dress that is supposed to touch the floor but hangs at our ankles just makes us look even more different and out of place. Anther example is a woman’s tee shirt that when we raise our arms shows our stomachs, which not all of us want to do. Jeans that are supposed to touch the floor but hit our ankles. All of these make us feel inadequate and out of place so I am grateful to be here to make those woes go away. We are really growing our product line this year and trying to add more and more items that are in style or trending in the regular clothing markets. I am really excited about what we have coming in this fall! Boyfriend jeans, long sleeve work tops, an oversized blazer, a shacket and more!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
For me personally, sports were the biggest confidence booster in my youth. As I got older, and didn’t have sports any longer, I learned that most people looked up to me for wearing my height with confidence and shoulders held high. I know not everyone has the same journey but that is what worked for me. I have two daughters, 7 and 9, who will more than likely be 6 footers. I try to instill in them that being tall is a gift, we act like its an exclusive club, and that it is an amazing trait to have. My oldest will point out tall girls and be so excited when she sees them public. I hope that tall women and tall young women can find that it is a gift and that they are beautiful. Stand tall, wear the heels, and if people have a problem with it, it’s their problem, not yours.
I also believe that being a former athlete has given me the drive to be an entrepreneur and solve this problem with grit and determination. When things don’t work I am able to change directions and solve the problems quickly. I can also navigate the highs and lows of being an entrepreneur (similar to the highs and lows of winning and losing in sports). This skill has been extremely helpful for my mental health in this journey.
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
In the last 12 months I have seen an incredible growth in my company. We have had a very popular influencer on social media share our products and tall women all over the country have flocked to our website buying our now, very popular jeans. We have had our biggest launch to date and about to launch an even bigger launch in the Fall. We are now offering 2 length of inseams and two maxi dress lengths to accommodate more tall ladies. As we grow we hope to offer more sizing options and length options.
