We were lucky to catch up with Chrys 3v3ntive Alva recently and have shared our conversation below.
Chrys 3v3ntive, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
Photography is not just a hobby, it is my passion. It fulfills me more than anything else and when I’m not with my camera I feel like I’m lacking purpose. My resilience is linked to my deep need to create, it’s outside my control, a drive to continue learning this craft.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I get to capture slices of unpredictable scenes in this movie we call life. I come from a humble background and as a child I found myself having so much I wanted to share with others without a safe way to do it. This silence led me to hard times and addiction. Photography gave me an outlet I had never experienced before, a way to share myself. My thoughts and feelings became frames, color saturation, and the contrast of lights and shadows. What excites me the most about photography and the career I have built is capturing the perfectly imperfect expressions of life, editing the composition to allow others to feel me through my photos that allow them the space to ask themselve the deeper introspective questions.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Psychology, graphic design, and an eye for composition.
Be consistent in shooting and exploring compositions.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
I try to remind myself when I’m overwhelmed I’m probably trying too hard, impacting my natural flow state.
My flow state is where I most often capture my best frames. Keep the focus on you, rather than comparing yourself to others, learn how you flow best. Look back at your older work to see your progress and how your eye is evolving.
