We recently connected with Vozz Rich and have shared our conversation below.
Vozz, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I was fortunate to discover my purpose as an artist after my 2nd child was born. Music became a much bigger part of our world as a family because I discovered how much sound and music impacted my daughter. There were songs that gave her energy, songs that helped her sleep, and songs that soothed and even sped up her learning. It became very clear to me that I didn’t just want to make music for the sake of making music. I wanted to make music that impacted human beings in very positive ways. I studied about different frequencies, and tones, and the effect they had when played by different instruments and at different beats per minute. This led me to realize my purpose and my goal as an artist was one and the same, to create sounds that uplifted people and accelerated joy and positivity for my listeners.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My names’ Vozz Rich and I’m a Texas based music producer. My music is Electronic but I incorporate live instruments and live vocals into my tracks that span latin, melodic, and tech-house genres. I like making music that people can dance to and feel good about.
Growing up in a music and entertainment oriented family, I come from generations of entertainers going back to my grand-mother who was a singer and stage actress in South Korea. My nieces and nephews are also accomplished actors on screen and television today.
I played several instruments growing. up including the guitar. I have a strong music production background and I’ve been producing music for over a decade.
Defying classification, my music is often hard to classify. I span electronic genres and do so because I refuse to be labeled as one single type of music maker. I believe that songs should make people happy and want to move and experience joy,
I’ve had fans from around the world write to me and tell me my songs have special meaning to them and that I’ve been part of incredible experiences for them, and it’s something I truly value in connecting with my listeners around the world.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
If I had to boil it down to three, I’d have to say the most impactful qualities that have helped me the most as an artist are:
1. Resiliency. You deal with so many ups and downs when you’re a creator and you make music. It’s a very risky time consuming art and you’re hit with setbacks all the time. It takes a great amount of resiliency to bounce back, learn from mistakes, and to roar back with creative energy.
2. Generosity. I learned early on that you build followings, first locally and then globally by showing kindness and by supporting others in the community. Being generous isn’t always about money, it can be about time and knowledge, and it often can go un-noticed but its never un-rewarded or forgotten. I think being generous has helped open doors and helped me shape a brand around “vozz” that is about positivity and growth.
3. Innovation. Challenging accepted methods and ways of doing things has truly helped me in my artist journey. Innovation is always pushing boundaries and the limits of what you can do with instruments, voices, and electronic software. It’s easy to create what others want to hear, and you can sometimes get caught up in sounding like everything else. I choose to innovate so that I don’t lose sight of how this is artistic expression and it’s ultimately up to us the artists, to deliver pleasing art that impacts audiences.
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
“The Power of One” by Bryce Courtenay was given to me as a child by a very dear old friend. I actually didn’t read it right away, but for some reason I kept it with me in a box of keepsakes. The box and the book moved with me several times, and made a journey across 3 continents before I finally picked it up and read it.
I’m so glad I did as the book was life altering. I learned about resilience and how powerful the human spirit really is. I would say the lessons from that book are what set me on a course for lifelong learning and lifelong appreciation for all the things we are born with as gifts. I still often turn to the lessons in the book when facing challenges in life, andi think it’s a must read for artists and entrepreneurs.
