We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Bishop Osei. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Bishop below.
Bishop, so many exciting things to discuss, we can’t wait. Thanks for joining us and we appreciate you sharing your wisdom with our readers. So, maybe we can start by discussing optimism and where your optimism comes from?
I think it comes from understanding that at the end of the day, my perspective on whatever I’m dealing with is the deciding factor on whether or not the situation is helpful or harmful. There is a lesson in everything, and every time I’ve found myself in a less than ideal predicament, I remind myself that I don’t really know what to expect from this experience. Like, yes, I know what I want, and I know what I’m striving to make out of my life, but, this is my first time being a human so I can’t really know how something is “supposed” to be to the point where I can determine whether or not this (situation) will or won’t be beneficial in the long run in some kind of way.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m an artist, music is my primary medium. I’ve flirted with instruments my whole life, from as far back as I can remember I was just playing by ear but not ever really taking the time to learn technically. On the contrary, I’ve been very dedicated to literature since I was 9. I loved writing short stories and the idea of becoming a screenwriter, but once I shifted my focus to poetry, I never looked back. It started with me being infatuated with Edgar Allan Poe, the way simply reading his words caused chills and goosebumps led me to trying to replicate it, sometimes in the most cliche ways possible, but hey, I wasn’t even a teenager yet. To stay on topic, I think that’s the most exciting thing for me: me, the ability to affect someone’s emotions and the fact that you’re essentially etched into history. Words are incredibly powerful, I’m still trying to figure out whether they are inherently powerful or if they’re only powerful if used with purposeful intent, but, I think its given me a way to express myself, and create my own world that will exist forever. I like to think of it like this: 300 years from now a person is casually searching for “2000’s hip hop,” they come across Flowers (2019), and then go down a rabbit whole the same way I did with Poe.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
DELUSION is a very underrated one, a lot of times it’s viewed as a negative behavior, with reason, but I’d argue it can be intentionally channeled and used as a skill. For now let’s call it Distortion. The mind is a conundrum, but one thing that’s clear as day is that the way you view yourself and your environment directly impacts your daily decisions, moreover, your daily decisions essentially create your environment. So, in a way, the “distorting” is just a metaphor for changing a behavior(s), or the way you view the things around you, so that it reflects in your daily decisions, creating a loop of forward progress aligning yourself with who you want to be in the event that that is not already who you are.
OBSESSION got me a LOT, but I think if uncontrolled it can turn into indifference. I became obsessed with music at age 15 but by 22 I found myself basically replaying my favorite songs that came out prior to 2021, and not really looking for newer sounds or growing with the artists I was listening to music wise because that feeling of obsession kind made me be stuck, for lack of a better term. I had to learn how to allow myself to be a fully dimensional human, its kind of silly to think that you’re entire existence will be centered around this one thing, it comes to a point where you’re trivializing life.
INTEGRITY. Sometimes it’s more important to know what you WON’T do. In the words of the Forrest Gump, “That’s all I have to say about that.”
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
‘Seven Spiritual Laws’ by Deepak Chopra
‘It’s All In Your Head’ by Russ
‘The Four Agreements’ by Don Miguel Ruiz
‘The 50th Law’ by Robert Greene and 50 Cent
Forgive me, I know you only asked for one, but if I had to choose one to eliminate, I’d eliminate myself. I think the common theme through all of these books is that if you want to bring something into your realty, the thing that will aid you most is what you allow yourself to believe.
““Events in life are not negative or positive. They are completely neutral. The universe does not care about your fate; it is indifferent to the violence that may hit you or to death itself. Things merely happen to you. It is your mind that chooses to interpret them as negative or positive.” – The 50th Law
