We were lucky to catch up with Natalie Burnett recently and have shared our conversation below.
Natalie, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
Hmm… These are good questions Ha; I think at first. was getting over the fear. of people saying “NO” and as well myself and others trying to compare myself to others in the beginning for me it was all about “The Goal” (I am going to do Stand-Up) then a few years ago then it came into mind I wouldn’t know what to do if I got “Big”? it wasn’t till just recently that I realized. I should really think about that in order to be effective/successful It was to be consistent. and then it was till just recently that I realized as well is that to be useful. You see I feel that the key to be effective was to be useful. and to be successful was to be motivated. and for a while I was very un-motivated till I watched the documentary “Arnold” on Netflix (I recommend it) it gave me this whole different outlook and that I am very thankful and very inspired to share It’s funny now that I look back that how I let other people’s opinion bother me and now none of that does anyone any good Be motivated.
Be consistent.
Be Useful
No one is more important than YOU.
I believe that is what makes you effective/successful.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Well… I’m a Comedian I make people laugh but I know now that I’ve grown as not only as a comedian but as a person. I want more I want people to laugh but as well I want people to be inspired. not only I will be traveling all over the US so if anyone needs entertainment as well as open to online conversations anyone can contact me and work out something special. But I am mom and been through. a lot and want to share that. I want to share and make a change the outlook on the system that controls. the system in foster care to know. that there are losses and victories in this certain system between the government and families I want to rip that Band-Aid off I want people to see for what it really is. Growth is what I am doing now growing. I want to…wait… I am going to be more than just making people laugh. there is more to me than a funny story but a story that can be told as inspiration.
It is a battle in a way because if you’re funny you’re not smart and if you’re smart, you’re not funny. So, I’m kind of trying to balance. in a way so when I’m funny. I am hoping. to reach someone in that crowd or even speaking to a random person I just met that when we part ways that they take it and smile and think.
I know how odd for someone like me to be funny and not to be involved but look into the government system.
Words to live by “Some men see things as they are, and say why? I dream of things that never were, and say “Why not?” -Robert F . Kenndy –
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
It may sound platitude but “Never give up on your goal.” Like I had said before ignoring all those people telling you “No” or that’s impossible those type of people is not beneficial.
I’ve learned to never sacrifice your happiness for something or someone else. don’t lose sight of your goal.
it’s easy to read those words and I know it’s a hard and easy to lose sight of your goal that you want to achieve.
and mine was relationships I had to learn to accept that when things don’t work out rather it’s a friendship or more.
Friends, family, and a partner they will support you and your goals.
And now I’ve learned you can easily get burnout as well and finding motivation is another thing I’ve implemented.
rather it’s a little kid determined to ride their bike, or a book implement motivation.
mine happen to be Arnold Schwarzenegger Documentary “Arnold” on Netflix “Be Useful” stood out when he said that, and it was like a light went on So yes “Be Useful.”
and own up to your mistakes. helps and come to terms. with every mess up and keep going because there is a goal you have to reach and if you already have reached your goal, you have maintained and grow your goal.
And remember YOU are important.
We’ve all got limited resources, time, energy, focus etc – so if you had to choose between going all in on your strengths or working on areas where you aren’t as strong, what would you choose?
Honestly, it’s a process a little bit of both.
The process is knowing your strengths and weaknesses. and when you know your strengths will help you improve your weaknesses.
It’s crazy as humans we are so quick to point out our weaknesses but never really our strengths. because what we think that are weaknesses and we use one of our strengths to improve a weakness it becomes another strength
and I believe your mind is a big strength. and you have to make that stronger I know i keep giving little hints about watching the “Arnold” Documentary on Netflix, but it is a must watch.
But he said someone told him “That everything you have accomplished money, fame, whatever that maybe it can all be taken away tomorrow but one thing no one can take is your mind.”
Strengthen your mind!
My mind for the longest time was my weakness I was always was at war with my mind always worried and thinking of a lot of the things and projects. I would that think were in impossible.
But my Heart is my strength telling me I could do these things, but my mind was not agreeing with my heart.
But I have to make my mind stronger and what better way to do that than books.
Yes, Books are one of the best things to make your mind stronger I started reading a lot of books that talked about success.
Bill Belichick War room book is really good.
The leadership Case studies series on Belichick. leadership and Nick Saban the series on him amazing as well
But as well and random Anthony Bourdain his books are a great read another quote to live by “The Journey Will Change You.”
So, all in all Go in with all your strengths AFTER you invest effort on your weaknesses.
It makes sense, right? (laughs)
