We were lucky to catch up with Shondreka Haith recently and have shared our conversation below.
Shondreka , we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
My resilience comes from the many challenges that life has faced me with. Never one to give up easily, to quit or throw in the towel, I developed an attitude of resilience and put my focus on finding a way to overcome the issues that arise. My earliest challenge that laid the foundation for my resilience is the car accident that I was in at the age of 12 years old. I was hit by a utility van which shattered my right arm and leg. I had to have reconstructive surgery and my right leg was casted. I was confined to a wheel chair for months. Doctors told me that I would never regain full range of motion of my right leg and I would not be able to run again. Hearing that, I was not willing to just sit back and accept that. I was determined to heal and come back stronger than ever being able to bend my right knee full range and run again. It took about a full 1 1/2 years of recovery and hard work but I did it! Determined to push through and not give up, I was able to restore my full range of motion and run again, something I was told I would not do again. Till this day, I am still running strong.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My name is Shondreka Haith, I’m a personal trainer and health coach. I am an advocate for health and fitness and living a lifestyle that promotes health longevity. I’ve always had a love of health and fitness throughout my early years in life but my passion for health and fitness skyrocketed after the birth of my son Aiden, I believe that as we age, we can still have a great quality of life. Meaning that aging does not necessarily mean that we will be plagued with health issues. With healthier lifestyle choices in food, nutrition, and exercise, we can live and maintain good health and a great quality of life. My goal is to spread the knowledge about what a healthy lifestyle can do for you long-term and the many benefits healthy living provides us especially as we age. I’m focused on this goal through personal training. I work with my clients to help them lose weight and become a healthier version of themselves. I educate my clients about the role & purpose of food in our lives and how to make healthier choices consistently. Food is fuel & movement is key. I am really big on total overall health. Exercise is not just about looking good but feeling good from the inside of our body to the outside. Recently I added health and wellness products to my fitness line to support healthy hair and skin health. My health and wellness line includes the ExecuteFitHealth Hair and Beard Oils and the ExecuteFitHealth Body Butter which are all available in my Etsy Shop Store. The Beard Oil was inspired by my husband Monty, who has an amazing full beard.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three qualities that were very impactful in my journey of becoming a personal trainer and wanting to work with, train, and inspire others to lead a healthy lifestyle are confidence, discipline and resilience. I can remember back in the day, I was really shy to the point were I refused to do a public speaking part of one my class assignments. I did not feel comfortable and would not get in front a crowd to speak. In my 20’s, I can recall vividly that God spoke to me on the path that he wanted to lead me in life. He said I want you to be an advocate for health and wellness and help others change their lives. I always loved working out and being healthy myself. I said you want me to train Lord? Me??!! Shy Shondreka and talk to strangers? He said yes you. So I started my journey towards it. Now when it comes to anything health and fitness, you can’t get me to stop talking. Lol. I love it. My advise for people early in their journey? Trust the process and believe in your abilities. Having these three qualities along with me during my journey has served me well.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
When I feel overwhelmed, I take some time to pray, meditate and go workout. Another strategy I use is the trusty old pen and paper. I will write down what’s causing me to feel overwhelmed and make a list of possible solutions and ways to solve the problem. I also write down what the worst case scenario could be which helps me put things into perspective. Writing things down and seeing them in black and white helps me to organize my thoughts and see things more clearly which helps me become less overwhelmed. That way I can focus on what I need to do to move the situation forward.
