We were lucky to catch up with Janika Green recently and have shared our conversation below.
Janika, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
Imposter syndrome is a big one for me. I believe I overcame imposter syndrome with three steps: isolating, praying and listening. In both the fashion and photography industries, it can be challenging to make your big debut or step into spaces that are on a much larger scale than you’re used to. With that, doubt came creeping in telling me that I wouldn’t get selected for different modeling opportunities or to be on the media team for larger shows. I pretty much would psych myself out before even applying. It wasn’t until recently that I had to stop and shut out the noise to pray and ask God to direct me and give me that boldness that I desired. Through reading scripture and evaluating the way I was going about things, I was reminded that I was created uniquely. Yes other people have the same skills and/or abilities but I have something that nobody else does; I’m Unik! I had to listen to what God said and remind myself that I wasn’t created to fail. Yes there may be challenges and obstacles to overcome but I have all that I need because He equipped me with the tools to do so. I am reminded who I am because of who He is. Knowing this, I use my God-given skills to be that unique experience curator whether in front of a camera or behind it. I aspire to capture the essence of each person or event I photograph by looking for the most organic smiles and moments for you to look back on and cherish forever. A reminder for you that you were created to “be Unik” as well.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, I can say that having faith, adaptability, and a true passion have been the most impactful qualities during my journey. You first have to trust that God wouldn’t give you more than you could handle. Second, you have to be able to pick yourself back up and adjust when things don’t go as planned. Learn from every mistake, every denial and setback. Use those emotions to push you even further the next time. And finally, having the passion behind what you’re doing will ensure your workday never feels like work; you’re simply doing what you love and watching the reactions from the people you impact.
I would encourage anyone starting off to always remember your “why”. Why did you want to start in the first place? What gave you that drive to start? Why did God give you this talent? Whenever your motivation gets low, think of these things and remind yourself that you were so loved that God gave you this gift for you to share your light with the world!
