We were lucky to catch up with Graham Guy recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Graham, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
Being raised in a Christian home and accepting Christ as my Savior, I have always found my purpose to be based on what scripture tells me in the Bible. The Bible tells us in Isaiah that we were created to worship God. I was fortunate enough to have parents and mentors growing up to point me to this truth. Time after time, I was taught the importance of prayer, reading the Bible, and living for Him. As my gifts and talents in music developed, my mentors stressed to me to always give credit to the ONE who gives me everything and focus on the fact that God, and He alone, is really my only audience that matters. So I try to live a life that honors the Lord, base all of my decisions on His truths, and live each day for His glory and purpose and not my own.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Currently I am a college student working towards my degree in music and worship leadership. I serve as the student leader for one of our touring worship teams and we travel several weeks during the year. We lead worship for churches, conferences, and camps/ retreats for students as well as adults. I found my love of music beginning in children’s choir at my home church, which led to private voice lessons, leading in youth band, and eventually leading in the adult worship band. At the age of 13, I picked up my first acoustic guitar and have since learned to play, keys, electric guitar, bass guitar, and would not rather be doing anything else besides sharing the Gospel through music. Through my private voice lessons and mentorship from my voice coach, I built confidence in my abilities and gifts from the Lord and know that my purpose is to use my talent to glorify God.
I also love to songwrite, and I have released several songs including 2 EPs on all of the streaming platforms. As a small Christian artist, I would love to grow my ministry and continue sharing His love and the Gospel through music. I have felt called to music ministry since the 8th grade and cannot imagine doing anything else. I am open to whatever door the Lord opens for me, but I would love to possibly lead worship at a church one day, while also continuing my artist development in songwriting and touring.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Besides the obvious learning the skills to play instruments and developing my vocal ability, I spend a lot of time learning to lead and trying to be a leader that others want to follow and are not made to follow. I definitely put in hours practicing and working on my skills but also have had mentors that have taught me the most important thing is not perfectly holding a note out, or never forgetting a lyric, but connecting with others and showing Jesus to them while using my talent for Him. One of my favorite quotes is ” I will be the exact same person that I am today 5 years from now except for the places I go, the people I meet, the books I read, and what I memorize.” Keeping that in mind and knowing that I only have an audience of ONE ( God ) impacts my journey every day!
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
No doubt the Bible is the most important book that I have read and read daily. I know that in order to live for God, I have to know God, and the way we do that is through His word and prayer. I have taken several leadership courses, and read many books on leadership, but none are as comprehensive about how we should live than the Bible. My morals, values, decision making, conduct, etc is all based on worshiping the God who created me. Those instructions all come from His word. When I read the Bible, I always ask the Lord for knowledge and understanding and to show me what he wants me to see in that day’s reading. It’s just like a relationship with any other person, friend, parents, etc., you must spend time with that person to get to know them, God is the same! We have to know Him to make Him known!
