We recently connected with Catherine Okubo and have shared our conversation below.
Catherine, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
Throughout my business journey, I’ve often been the youngest person in the room and frequently the only woman. Initially, I felt self-conscious and insecure about it, but over time I discovered that these distinctions are powerful assets. Being underestimated based on appearance has motivated me to consistently exceed expectations and leave a lasting impression. In a world where many strive to mimic others, embracing authenticity has proven to be the cornerstone of effective leadership.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m the CEO of MPB Health, an innovative company revolutionizing healthcare by offering high-quality, alternative solutions at significantly lower costs than traditional options for those who don’t qualify for subsidies. Our comprehensive plans cover major medical expenses, unlimited telehealth consultations, mental health support, and offer substantial discounts on supplements and vitamins. We also provide a robust pharmacy benefits program, a secure personal medical records vault, and a QR Life Code for seamless health management, creating what I call a true “Healthy Care” plan that embraces a holistic approach to wellness.
What excites me most is our commitment to putting our members’ health first. We firmly believe that when our members are healthier, it benefits everyone. This guiding principle drives our work at MPB Health, ensuring that our innovative solutions deliver real value to our community.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Being a hard worker, embracing enthusiasm, and maintaining strong organizational skills are essential qualities. Hard work builds competence and earns respect from your team; when you consistently put in the effort, you naturally become more confident and ready for any challenge. Enthusiasm is contagious, it inspires those around you and creates an environment where progress happens naturally. Finally, solid organizational skills are vital for achieving success and a structured approach helps you manage your time and resources effectively, however you must balance it so that you don’t become ‘too’ structured, as that could hinder your ability to take risks.
My advice for anyone is to seek experience early on and embrace lifelong learning, especially during your downtime. Rather than getting caught up in trivial politics or mindless entertainment, use your free time to read, take courses, or engage in activities that enhance your skills and knowledge. Cultivate a genuine passion for learning, and you’ll consistently stay ahead of the curve.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
Rod Maxson, the founder of MPB Health, has been an incredible mentor. Not only is he a visionary, but he genuinely cares about the team and our members, qualities that set him apart from any other business leader I’ve met. His commitment to delivering an exceptional healthcare experience is inspiring, and he empowers every employee to have a genuine voice within the company.
Under his mentorship, my leadership skills have grown tremendously, thanks to the invaluable insights he provided. It’s wonderful how two people, despite their differences, can complement and learn from one another when united by common goals. Rod and his wife have become like family to me, and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to know them.
