Meet Evelyn Hernandez

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Evelyn Hernandez. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Evelyn below.

Hi Evelyn, thank you for being such a positive, uplifting person. We’ve noticed that so many of the successful folks we’ve had the good fortune of connecting with have high levels of optimism and so we’d love to hear about your optimism and where you think it comes from.

I think the best question I found here was this one because optimism is something that I put out to everyone I encounter and it seems like people always say that I am always in a good mood and glowing energy to put a smile on people. I definitely would call this optimistic energy and I do think that putting out this kind of energy to the world will help create more smiles all around and a better environment. when it comes to school, having optimistic energy will create others around you to also feel good about the workload and projects that might be stressful at first but with that optimistic energy you help others settle the stress a bit. In a working environment having that optimism can help you and your coworkers get through crazy deadlines and when you are leading a team that will help your team also get their work done know you are creating reassurance in the environment. Optimism is also important in your family relationships because it also helps keep you all feelings less stressed and more focused on every moment you spend together and cherishing the good times. when times are rough, we cant run away from them, but with a bit of optimism, you can help getting through things feel a lot smoother, brighter and easier.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I am an animator and filmmaker creating all sorts of content. My story begins as a kid in kindergarten that loved painting and making art. I continued making art and comic strips as a kid, while telling myself I could maybe make cartoons in the future. Finishing up elementary I was handed a portfolio which was collected and passed through every grade since kindergarten that let me understand that I had a special talent that I needed to focus on, since even my teachers noticed it.
I continued drawing and then also picked up a love for cameras during my high school years. I got into video editing and creating funny videos with visual effects using creative ways to edit video and assets without a compositing software by wiring up video games, VCRs, Video Recorders and TVs to create some edited entertaining content for my friends, family and me to laugh at and enjoy. I also got into Computer Aided Design in high school which introduced me into the 3D world. All these interests took me through college exploring these artistic interests, even trying the architecture design industry which I did not enjoy and let me keep going until I knew that animation was my true love in what I would be doing for a living.
I explored through 2 junior colleges and graduated from CSUF majoring in entertainment animation and then continued into working in the VFX industry as an animator. As an animator and artist, my passion lies in creating content that moves you on a small and big scale. I love animating on projects while working with big name studio teams and smaller independent teams. Sometimes that is a feature film in the marvel series that we can all watch at a movie theater, music videos for artist like Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, Tiesto, Post Melone or it can be concert visuals for a band like the Killers or even a live performance like Mindfreak by Criss Angel. Sometimes depending on the studios and clients I am just animating and in some cases creating the content from scratch all the way to the edited final render.
Working on projects outside of what I call my professional work is always just as much of a treat that keeps me leveling up my skills because creating film projects is another passion I can dive into during my free time or in between work contracts. What I love about independent projects is the freedom and liberty to work on anything and with anyone you want with no limits to the story and quality of the work. I have multiple projects at different stages like any artist might, which also includes the main baby project that you throw that lazer focus on because that is the only way to get something finished. I have a short film which is my main current project about fairies based on a personal love who passed away. This began as a tribute to that person and has continued to grow into a project that has involved many more personal life experiences that have kept making the film’s story grow. That life journey being fed on to create a film is what makes it a great film that others can enjoy if done right. Looking at my past films, I always feel like I could have done it a lot better, but that is always the thought when you know you are growing as an artist and a part of you wants to remake those past works. That energy is what you keep throwing at your new projects so every new project, video or film is better than the last.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

1. always keep learning: always try new things and new methods. Right now AI is supposedly going to erase artists, so give that a try and see if it’s so great or if it hinders your artist workflow. if it helps use it, if it helps you create something cool that is in your artworks final results then try adapting it into your workflow.
2. stay present: life can change from day to day so always remember to stay focused and look at what your goal is right now and the next few days or years. life gets crazy at times, and our pasts can also craw back in, but remember to keep your chin up and and think about what you need to do right now to keep going to tomorrow.
3. challenge yourself: when you finish something, challenge yourself to create something better every time. Naturally I think we have the thirst for this but if you forgot this just look at everything you have created and watch what inspires you so you get inspired to create new things at a new level. there will always be new ideas for you to create so why not make it awesome. Your eye will get better for detail every time so the works will naturally get better every time as long as you keep creating..

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?

I am definitely looking for people to collaborate with. Whether you are an artist or investor that wants to be a part of a very creative project, I am always looking for people to work with and even students who want experience in projects and would like some guidance. I love sharing my experience and tips just as much as I love working with artists on my level or above because learning from one another is always key. Even working with non artist people teaches me parts of the pipeline that I have little experience in or just life experiences in general. Collaboration is a key to learning new things quicker in my opinion.
