Meet Mekhi Terry

We recently connected with Mekhi Terry and have shared our conversation below.

Mekhi, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?

You see the funny thing about that is…I still am. I could simply say that the development of my confidence and self-esteem comes from the path of life that my faith has led me through. Or, the constant mental warfare to chase a better version of myself every waking day. Through taking my mental health serious and attending therapy I was able to destroy the fragile mindset that weighed me down. Prior to therapy, I went through numerous periods of self-doubt in my own designs, in my business decisions, and even my place in life. In order to obtain the qualities of the confident person that I envisioned for myself to be. That meant accepting me for who I am, embracing my flaws & believing in whatever it maybe be regardless of what anyone thinks. If I don’t believe in myself, then who will? The battle between me & the man I see in the mirror is how the growth of my confidence and self-esteem is developed.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

For those who may not know me currently, my name is Mekhi Terry, brand owner & creative director of, ‘Human Target’. A young passionate creative of many talents, a visionary who uses fashion as to a medium to express my ideas & philosophies of the world. I was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA until my family & I moved to the east coast of Atlanta, GA when I was around the age of six. Early on, both my mom, my two brothers & I would travel back & forth between the two cities almost every summer, which allowed me to create many great memories during those early times. Those core memories have helped develop my cultural perspective of how I envision the world. My perspective of the world has been crafted through a very unique lens, one I have learned over time to appreciate. That same lens & the God given abilities have allowed me the chance to showcase talents I didn’t even realize that I was capable of accomplishing. I love just being able to create things or experiences that I can share with others. Whether it’s creating a collection, content, creating music, or a visual experience I love it all. Currently, I am focused on re-branding my business with new knowledge that I have learned through trial & error. Our upcoming collection expands on the foundational pieces previously released with a bold fresh look, and enticing pieces that portray the story told behind, ‘Human Target’. I would definitely recommend paying attention to our instagram page and site for more details as pieces tend to move quite quickly with our limited drops.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Three qualities that were the most impactful in my journey it are as follows: changing my perspective on how I see life, bettering my habits to educate myself, and not only strengthening areas of weakness but accepting them. Changing my perspective of how I envision life did wonders for me. For that to happen I needed to work on my mental health. I have been attending therapy for about over a year & some change now. It has allowed me to not only be more confident in myself, but also in the direction of where I envision my dreams will take me. After choosing to dropout of college, I chose to move to Pittsburgh with my family to reevaluate my plans to bring my dreams & ambitions into fruition. Early on it took me awhile to figure out the key information necessary to build a successful streetwear clothing brand. Especially since none of my family or friends had never been apart of the fashion industry. So educating myself through what some like to refer to as “youtube university”, diving through books, or researching relative topics to expand my tool belt. Rebuilding yourself from the inside out helps ease your mindset, which then allows you to practice good habits & boost your drive to succeed.

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?

An important book that has been essential to development would be, “The 48 Laws of Power” by Robert Greene. The first nugget of wisdom that I would to share is law #25, page 191, titled ‘Recreate Yourself’. Law 25 states, “Do not accept the roles that society foists on you. Re-create yourself by forgiving a new identify, one that commands attention and never bores the audience. Be the master of your own image rather than letting others define it for you. Incorporate dramatic devices into your public gestures and actions—your power will be enhanced and your character will seem larger than life.” One more piece that I’ll leave you guys with is from law #48, page 419, titled ‘Assume Formlessness’. It reads, “By taking a shape, by having a visible plan, you open yourself to attack. Instead of taking a form for your enemy to grasp, keep yourself adaptable and on the move. Accept the fact that nothing is certain and no law is fixed. The best way to protect yourself is to be as fluid and formless as water: never bet on stability or lasting order. Everything changes.”
