Meet Kevin Pinkerton

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kevin Pinkerton a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Kevin, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.

For several years, I struggled with imposter syndrome. Despite achieving some success in my career and receiving positive feedback from colleagues and mentors, I often felt like a fraud. I constantly worried that people would eventually discover I wasn’t as competent as they thought. This feeling held me back from pursuing new opportunities and sharing my ideas, leaving me stuck in a cycle of self-doubt.But in the spring of 2022 I was diagnosed with stage 3.5 colon and rectal cancer. After the surgery and then being sent to a rehab rehabilitation hospital, I spent a total of 53 days in the hospital.. during that time I went into a coma and was on life-support for five days after coming out of the coma, it took me several months to recover, and then nine months of chemotherapy. After all that. I somehow felt a new beginning.. I began to think differently and see things different and I felt it was a kind of a rebirth that I was able to look at things in a different light and now it’s easier for me to accept the accolades. And success I received some sometimes..

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

Currently, I’m applying to different open calls for different galleries and Art fairs around the world and various artists in residence programs around the world..Next month I will be in an art magazine called artist close up..
And I will be starting a new series of paintings which really has me excited They will be based on abstract, landscapes of orchards and Vineyards.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

I think in an academic setting as a art student you need to learn the basics of drawing color theory and art h history,.on the other hand today, you don’t necessarily have to be an artist who went through some sort of art formal education self expression cannot be taught in a school that is another aspect of the art world.. I believe there’s nothing that is bad art it’s self expression
But there will be people who disagree with me. It’s the viewer to decide if it’s good or it’s not.

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?

Since The Covid outbreak in 2020 as you know the world has changed and our work environment and habits have changed. As a visual artist our way of working have changed. Now now there is a change of how galleries work and show art.Now digital exhibition are popular and artists have to pay a fee to have their work displayed digitally. Now artists and creators have to do a lot of things the gallery would do for the artist
We must have high quality images of our work in case our work will be shown digitally or for print catalogs. We as artists we have to learn how to promote ourselves and do administrative things that galleries use to do for artist.
