We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nicholas R Tanner a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Nicholas R, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
Being the only one in the room that looks like you can be both a challenge and an opportunity. My parents instilled in me a strong foundation of morals and values, teaching me the importance of understanding and respecting diverse perspectives. They made sure I was well-rounded and exposed to different cultures, beliefs, and experiences, which helped me develop empathy and adaptability.
In situations where I’m the only one in the room that looks like me, I focus on authenticity and confidence. I remind myself that my unique perspective is an asset, not a limitation. I make a conscious effort to listen actively, speak with intention, and find common ground with others. Building relationships and showing respect for others’ experiences allows me to bridge gaps and foster collaboration.
Ultimately, success in these situations comes from understanding that I am part of a larger world where diversity strengthens us all. By staying true to my values, being open to learning, and recognizing the power of connection, I’ve learned to thrive, no matter the room.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, three qualities that were most impactful in my journey were being personable, paying attention to detail, and embracing creativity. Being personable allowed me to build genuine connections and foster strong relationships with clients and collaborators. Paying attention to detail ensured that every project, no matter how small, reflected excellence and care. Creativity was essential in finding innovative ways to solve problems and make our work stand out.
For those early in their journey, my advice is to stay focused and diligent in your work. Understand that this is a marathon, not a sprint—success takes time, patience, and perseverance. Avoid burning yourself out by pacing yourself and prioritizing your mental and physical well-being. Most importantly, lean on God for understanding, discernment, and strength. His guidance will help you navigate challenges and stay true to your purpose. Keep pushing forward, and trust that your dedication will pay off in the end.

Yes, we are always looking for people or brands to collaborate with or partner with. Teamwork and multiple creative perspectives are essential for achieving greatness. One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned in life is that there’s no such thing as being too old or too young to learn from someone.
