We were lucky to catch up with Keith Knight recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Keith , we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
I remember my twin sister and I were taken out of our regular grade school and put into a program called “Majorworks”. It was supposedly for the smartest kids in our city.
From 4th to 6th grade, we did plays, wrote puppet shows, did all types of art and presentations. It was the best time I ever had in grade school.
The program ended after 6th grade, and my sister and I returned to regular school. But I always carried with me the fact that I went through this program as one of the smartest kids in the city.
Flash forward two years ago, we were helping my mom clean out her house, and we came across some stuff I did in Majorworks. I boasted how we were the smartest kids in the city. And my mom said, “you weren’t picked for that program..Your twin sister was chosen, And I told them they had to take you with her to keep her company.”
So, I wasn’t one of the smartest kids in town, my sister was. And I was her companion animal.
But those three years were imprinted on me, and I’ve held my head high forever after that.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I create comic strips that hopefully make people laugh, or think, or both. I do autobiographical, slice-of-life strips. But I also do comics about social issues. I believe cartoons are a wonderful medium for the masses, young and old. And a great way to spread stories.
From the comics, I’ve created all types of media. One that I’m particularly proud of is my tv show, “Woke” on Hulu. We did two seasons, and the show continues to be relevant for years after we’ve finished it.
I also do comic strip slideshow presentations on how comics have played a huge part in social justice movements for centuries.
I’m just about to embark slideshow/book tour of Boston and New York City in Feb./Mar. of 2025.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1. Writing–Writing is more important in a comic strip than the art. If you have a great joke or fun story to tell, you can use stick figures and it will work.
2. Know how to market yourself and your work if you want to make a career out of it
3. Do not be afraid to ask for help
How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?
The ever diminishing amount of venues where cartoonists can get published and paid.
