We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nicholas Hartley a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Nicholas, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
I got my work ethic from my mother. She always works hard and finishes all of her tasks. Also, growing up my mother raised me by herself so I had to cook, clean and take care of myself while she was at work. Because of this, I grew up independent. Circumstances made me who I am.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Our journey started 12 years ago. We were tired of all the high sodium in the seafood boils. We set out to make something better, we found a blender and ordered $500 of spices to make our own. Two years later we had our first Shrimp & Crab Boil. Then, we progressed to making all of our own seasonings for our home. Just before COVID, we started our business Compass Point Blend. When COVID hit, I was overseas for most of the next three years, so our business was halted shortly after we started. Then we started our business back up in October 2022. In January 2023, we were licensed as a Manufacturer and Warehouse.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
My mother being a Master Chef and Culinary Arts Instructor, my career as a Ship Captain along with my strong work ethic and not taking no for an answer. My advice is to constantly work at your goals, do your research, network with everyone and make sure you surround yourself with positive people that want to help or encourage you and your goals.

Alright, so before we go we want to ask you to take a moment to reflect and share what you think you would do if you somehow knew you only had a decade of life left?
Our current challenge is with the retail market and getting our products into chain retail stores. We are working with a major southern grocery chain at the moment, so hopefully this will propel us forward.
