Meet Sara Bettinati

We were lucky to catch up with Sara Bettinati recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Sara , so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?

I’ve always wanted to be different from other ones.
So i found a inner, fantasy power to be that way.
And, conseguently i created a job that can be considered different, new, atipic.
I think every person is unique ad deserves a unique piece so i learnt how to use a piece of paper to create wallets, purses, cases.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

Sara’s Paper is my world. The world i create when I found myself sick and tired of the classic fashion system and the rules it gets (i worked as a knitwear designer for 10 years).
I wanted to be free to create what my mind decided and i wanted to do it in a sustainable way.
So i started to reach for old adandoned paper and search for the right and ecofriendly way to make it waterproof and than sew it.
I begun to give paper new life creating wallets, pouches, cases and others.
My business started in 2012 as a small small one and continued to grew up every year.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

– working with unusual materials and fabrics i always faced with unusual problems. So i consider myself as a very openminded person.
– working as a paper designer means that i see (in my mind) a preview of what my hands are going to create. And i’m so proud of this!
– i always try to search for the right papers to use. It is not easy to find all that ancient paper, it takes a lot of time and patience!

So my advice is to always have patience, always practice the “mind preview” so you can better develop your creative job.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?

If Granny can also be consider as important as a parent i can surely say that the most impactful thing was that she gave her old ‘70s sewing machine so i started to sew with her!
