We recently connected with Leydi Suarez and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Leydi, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I have discovered my true purpose in helping others within my community. Through sponsoring women in a twelve-step program, I not only offer support to those in need but also receive invaluable growth in my own journey. Also, my work with adolescents in prevention has reignited my sense of meaning and fulfillment, reminding me daily of how far I’ve come. I am deeply committed to using my personal experiences with alcohol addiction to guide women and young people toward brighter, healthier futures. Giving back has become not just a passion, but a vital part of my own healing and growth which I try to work on everyday.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
For years, I battled with alcohol addiction, which took a toll on my health, relationships, and sense of self-worth. It was a dark period, but I made the choice to turn my life around. Now, after being sober for 2 years and 5 months, I can confidently say that my past struggles have shaped who I am today. I realized that my experience could serve as a beacon of hope for others. The most significant leap of faith I took was leaving the office job I had dedicated many years to. I wanted to help young people avoid the same pitfalls I had fallen into, and to equip them with the life skills and coping mechanisms I wished I had known when I was their age. Becoming a prevention specialist has been one of the most fulfilling decisions of my life. Every day, I get the chance to use my story to help young people build resilience, make healthier choices, and realize their potential & I’m grateful to be doing work that matters. I am incredibly grateful for this new life that once seemed impossible during my time in active alcoholism. I’ve regained the love and support of my parents and sister, and I’m now engaged to a wonderful man.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1. Becoming more self-aware allowed me to see the patterns in my life that led to my addiction, and it gave me the strength to change them. 2. Resilience has been my anchor. There were times I felt like giving up, but I found strength in pushing through the tough moments, knowing that the progress would come. 3. Surrounding myself with people who understood my journey made all the difference. The support I received from others who had been through similar experiences was empowering and gave me hope for the future.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
The most impactful thing my parents did for me was never giving up on me, even after years of struggling with alcohol addiction. Their unwavering belief in me, even when I couldn’t believe in myself, gave me the strength to keep going. They showed me love, patience, and support, which were crucial when I felt lost and hopeless. Their constant presence in my life was a reminder that no matter how far I had fallen, there was always a path back, and they were there to walk it with me.
