Meet Milan Lazic

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Milan Lazic a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Milan, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.

After many years in the photography industry and facing the relentless flood of countless images emerging daily, it’s clear that photography, as an art form, has endured and continues to face significant challenges. Yet, even amidst this overwhelming sea, I always manage to catch a spark of inspiration that keeps me moving forward. Staying creative today is no easy task — in one way or another, we all end up imitating, even subconsciously, especially in photography. My ongoing passion for exploring light and music serves as my greatest creative fuel, and perhaps that’s the key to keeping my creativity alive.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I started getting into photography early, back in high school. Always with a camera in hand, my beginnings were rooted in analog photography, leaning towards art-focused work. Little did I know that this would eventually become my profession, though in a completely different field — wedding photography. In the end, love and passion triumphed over everything else.

Digital photography is advancing at lightning speed, but it’s fair to say that wedding photographers have remained among the best in the industry. Wedding photography today is incredibly fun and creative, requiring you to be an art photographer, a photojournalist, and a fashion photographer — all in one. That’s actually the most enjoyable and exciting part of this job.

The competition is fierce, and staying true to yourself and your style while remaining original is a big challenge. We’ve managed to build a recognizable style, and that’s our advantage over others.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

1. Observation and the Power of Application: Photography, especially wedding photography, relies on fresh ideas and a unique artistic perspective. I recommend exploring various forms of art and continually challenging yourself through personal projects outside client work. Inspiration often comes from unexpected sources.

2. Adaptability: No two weddings are the same. Lighting conditions, weather, and client expectations can change in an instant. The ability to adapt quickly and solve problems is essential. Early on, practice shooting in different environments and unpredictable situations. Flexibility will become your greatest ally.

3. Communication Skills: Building trust and a good relationship with clients is just as important as taking great photos. A relaxed and happy couple results in better photos. Work on clear and confident communication, and learn how to guide clients without making them feel uncomfortable.

Advice: For those just starting, never stop learning. Seek mentors, attend workshops, and don’t be afraid of feedback. Build a solid foundation, but always leave room for growth and experimentation. Your personal touch and consistency will set you apart from others.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?

I grew up in a big family, and my parents had a significant influence on my personality. The most important lesson I carry from that time is that you always need someone by your side. What’s the point if you’re alone? That’s why I’m always surrounded by people who matter and who support me.
