We recently connected with Grace Bennett and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Grace, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
I come from a family of farmers, tradesmen, and small business owners, so a strong work ethic has always been a part of my life. Growing up, I saw firsthand what it meant to put in the hours, take pride in craftsmanship, and build something that lasts. My dad, especially, instilled in me the value of working hard—not just for the sake of getting the job done, but for the deep satisfaction of being able to stand back and truly be proud of what you’ve created. That mindset has shaped the way I approach my work today. Whether it’s designing a space or running my business, I believe in giving my absolute best, knowing that effort and integrity always show in the final result.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I run Henry House Designs, where my focus is on creating timeless, thoughtful designs that feel both practical and deeply personal. I have a lifelong appreciation for craftsmanship and storytelling that has shaped the way I approach every project. I believe a home should reflect the lives lived within it—layered, meaningful, and designed to stand the test of time.
One of the things I find most exciting about my work is the opportunity to help people create spaces that truly enhance their lives. Whether it’s a full-scale renovation, a carefully curated room refresh, or guiding clients through design choices, my goal is always to balance beauty with function in a way that feels effortless.
Right now, I’m especially excited about a new virtual interior styling package I’m launching, designed to make professional design services more accessible. It’s a streamlined approach that allows clients to receive a custom, cohesive design plan tailored to their space, lifestyle, and taste—without the full commitment of a traditional design project. It’s perfect for those who want guidance but still love to be hands-on in bringing their space to life.
Beyond the work itself, I love connecting with others who appreciate timeless design, whether it’s through social media, collaborations, or simply sharing inspiration. For me, design is about more than aesthetics—it’s about creating a home that feels like an extension of who you are, and I feel so blessed to help people do just that.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I would say, first, having an eye for timeless design has been essential. Trends come and go, but creating spaces that feel both enduring and personal is what truly makes a home special. Growing up in the Midwest, I was surrounded by generational homes that stood the test of time, no matter the trends. I now have a deep appreciation for a hard working house. I’ve developed my skill more by studying classic architecture, analyzing movie set designs (always a fun pastime), and asking why certain designs stand the test of time. For those starting out, I’d recommend immersing yourself in a variety of design styles, paying attention to details, and trusting your instincts—great design is as much about feeling as it is about aesthetics.
Second, adaptability has been key. Whether it’s shifting design plans due to unexpected challenges or evolving my business model to better serve clients, being flexible has allowed me to navigate the ups and downs of entrepreneurship. I’ve started a few small businesses for myself (photographer and produce farmer to name a couple). Something I have grown to appreciate are the lessons I have learned through those adventures. Using the past to drive the present is something I think we could all do more of.
Lastly, a strong work ethic has been foundational in building my business. Interior design is about so much more than selecting beautiful pieces—it requires patience, problem-solving, and a commitment to seeing projects through from concept to completion. I’ve learned that success comes from consistently putting in the effort, even when no one is watching. For those just starting, I’d say: take pride in every step of the process, be willing to go the extra mile, and remember that the best results come from passion paired with perseverance.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I’m looking to collaborate with talented furniture makers and home decor brands that focus on quality craftsmanship and timeless design. I value partners who prioritize creating pieces that enhance both the functionality and beauty of a space.
