Meet Meimei Liu

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Meimei Liu. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Meimei, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.

As growing up, my parents were my biggest supporters. They always encouraged me to explore the things I loved and were willing to give me opportunities to showcase myself, no matter how small or big the occasion was. Their support went beyond simple words of encouragement—their actions showed unconditional trust. For instance, whenever I showed interest in something, whether participating in a small activity or stepping onto a bigger stage, they would let me give it my all without hesitation or limitation.

When I was looking back, this nurturing environment taught me to seize opportunities without fear of failure. Each time I faced a new challenge, I chose to fully commit and wholeheartedly believe in my abilities. Over time, this habit of “believing in myself” became second nature. It allowed me to approach new challenges with confidence and composure. My self-esteem wasn’t built overnight—it was the result of countless moments of trust, encouragement, and support from my parents.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I am currently employed by a company specializing in creating vertical dramas—a dynamic and innovative format designed for mobile audiences. This role has been an incredible opportunity for professional and personal growth. As an emerging field, vertical drama offers a unique chance to explore new storytelling methods and reimagine traditional narratives for today’s mobile-first world.

What excites me most about this work is its perfect combination of creativity and technical expertise. Each project feels like solving a complex puzzle: it’s not just about editing scenes to create a narrative but about understanding audience behavior and how they interact with content on their devices. There’s a special thrill in experimenting with this modern format and maximizing every second of screen time to engage and connect with viewers.

Beyond the craft of film editing, this role has profoundly enriched my life experience. Working on real cases means collaborating closely with a talented team, managing tight deadlines, and making creative decisions that resonate with a diverse audience. It has significantly strengthened my communication and problem-solving abilities, proving that the skills I’m gaining extend far beyond the technical.

Looking to the future, I see immense potential in vertical dramas and their ability to shape the digital entertainment landscape. I’m incredibly excited to continue evolving with this format, pushing creative boundaries, and producing content that entertains, inspires, and connects with audiences on a deeper level.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

When I look back at my journey, three qualities have proven to be absolute game-changers: adaptability, a relentless pursuit of growth, and masterful communication. These qualities aren’t just helpful—they are essential to stand out, make an impact, and sustain success over time.

Adaptability:
In this fast-paced, constantly shifting industry, I’ve learned that staying flexible and embracing change is not just a skill but a powerful advantage. I’ve faced numerous moments where things didn’t go as planned—whether it was changes in trends, technology disruptions, or unforeseen challenges. But every single time, my adaptability was my greatest strength. It allowed me to remain composed, pivot quickly, and deliver solutions, no matter how the landscape shifted.

Do not fear to change; embrace it. The world is evolving, and the more adaptable you are, the better equipped you will be to ride those waves. Take on new challenges, step into unfamiliar territories, and view uncertainty not as a roadblock but as the breeding ground for new opportunities. Confidence grows when you are willing to step outside your comfort zone.

Relentless Pursuit of Growth:
You cannot rest on your laurels for too long. Success is not about reaching a point where you are comfortable; it is about continuously pushing forward, growing, and evolving. In this field, there is always something to learn, a new technique to master, or a trend to understand. I have never been afraid to invest time and energy into improving my skill set because growth is an ongoing process that does not end.

Embrace the mentality of never-ending improvement. Learn every day. Read books, take courses, and find mentors. More importantly, you should actively practice and apply what you have learned to real-world situations. Growth is not passive—you must actively seek it out and, more importantly, demand it of yourself.

Masterful Communication:
The importance of communicating confidently and effectively can not be overstated. But it is not just about how well you can talk—it is about knowing when to speak, when to listen, and how to articulate your thoughts so that they resonate. I have learned that the ability to share ideas concisely, listen with intent, and build rapport with diverse teams is a game-changer in a collaborative industry like mine. Whether working with creatives, stakeholders, or clients, communication builds trust and drives success.

Do not underestimate the power of communication. Early on, prioritize expressing your ideas, presenting your work confidently, and building your ability to interact with diverse personalities. Leaders are often the best listeners first, and communication is a two-way street. The more precise you are about your vision and expectations, the more influence you’ll have in shaping outcomes. Own your voice, and learn how to use it effectively.

For anyone early in their career, I can tell you one thing with absolute certainty: The journey won’t be easy, but the rewards are immense if you commit to these principles. Seek every opportunity to push yourself, learn from mistakes, and grow—sometimes, your biggest lessons come from failure. Surround yourself with people who make you better, and get comfortable with the discomfort of stretching your limits. You won’t achieve success by playing it safe—it’s the risks, the challenges, and the persistence that will make you stand out.

Create your opportunities. Do not wait for things to be handed to you—go after them with everything you have. Believe in your potential, even when no one else does. The confidence you build through your actions will be the foundation for your future. Above all, be patient with your progress—success will come if you are bold enough to stay the course and refuse to settle for mediocrity.

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?

My mentor is the most important person who has helped me build myself up. She’s not just a guide—she’s like a wise, supportive older aunt who has been there for me in many ways throughout my life. Her influence goes far beyond the role of a traditional mentor.

Whenever I face challenges or find myself at a crossroads, she is always the first person I think of to reach out to. She listens with patience and empathy, never rushing to offer solutions but encouraging me to express myself fully. What makes her unique is her ability to balance understanding with guidance. Rather than imposing her opinions, she asks thought-provoking questions that help me find my answers.

Sometimes, she’s more than just a mentor; she becomes a bridge in my family dynamics. Like all families, mine and I occasionally have our differences. In these moments, she doesn’t just listen to my perspective—she actively helps mediate. She has even taken the time to speak with my parents on my behalf when necessary. Her ability to bring calm, reason, and understanding to tense situations has helped us navigate disagreements with compassion and clarity. She truly has a way of making everyone feel heard and valued; I deeply admire her.

Beyond these moments, her steady presence has taught me lifelong skills, such as communicating effectively, embracing challenges, and trusting my instincts. She’s shown me that having my perspective while respecting others is okay, a lesson that has made me more confident and independent.

What I admire most about her is her always encouraging me to think for myself. She offers advice, but it’s never about telling me what to do. Instead, she helps me see my strengths and untapped potential, empowering me to solve problems. Her kindness and wisdom have shaped how I approach challenges, making me more thoughtful and self-reliant.

Her belief in me has been unwavering, even when I’ve had moments of self-doubt. Having someone like her in my corner has helped me grow and reminded me of the importance of having mentors who guide you with both wisdom and heart. For anyone starting their journey, I would encourage you to seek out someone who sees your potential and supports you not just as a professional but as a person.
