We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mason Askins a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Mason, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
Our company is dedicated to consistently producing the highest quality Bloody Mary Mix. Our goal is to capture the essence of handcrafted cocktails and package them, allowing everyone to enjoy an authentic mixologist experience from the comfort of their home.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Mason Askins is the Founder and CEO of Barts Bar Beverages. Established in 2018, Barts was a company that had been conceptualized over 20 years. The Bloody Mary recipe was introduced to Mason by his friend, Bart Wadill. One morning, when Bart was making Bloody Marys, Mason tried it despite not liking them initially. He found that he favored Bart’s Bloody Mary recipe. Mason made a promise to one day build a company using that very Bloody Mary recipe.
Mason began his career in high-end retail, where he worked for 10 years. He eventually opened a men’s clothing store named Southern Comforts, where he served Barts Bloody Mary’s at events. Customers loved them. After closing his retail business, Mason transitioned into the Oil & Gas industry, working for several petroleum companies before investing in and later starting his own lay flat hose company.
Mason eventually moved to Central Texas and kept the company open but decided to venture full-time into the Barts Bar Beverage world after realizing he really didn’t have a passion for the industry any longer. So, in 2018, Barts was born. Mason knew he had a really great product. Now, he’s thrilled to spearhead a company that he’s passionate about and truly loves the outcome—because he enjoys hearing stories about customers who love the product. Earlier this year, Barts Bloody Mary Mix won the Double Gold in the Michelada Category and Best in Class Platinum for Bloody Mary Mix at the SIPS Awards, earning it recognition as the World’s #1 Bloody Mary mix.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
• One thing I have learned in this journal is that life is too short not to drink from my Waterford crystal because every day should be cherished.
• I have gained more insight from my failures than from my successes. The lessons learned from setbacks are the ones that remain indelibly imprinted.
• For business owners, the ability to adapt is essential.
