We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Deepa Bharat. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Deepa below.
Hi Deepa, thank you so much for agreeing to open up about a sensitive and personal topic like being fired or laid-off. Unfortunately, there has been a rise in layoffs recently and so your insight and experience with overcoming being let go is relevant to so many in the community.
How I overcame my last layoff was by pushing my business to the next level. I had just began my journey and craft while I was working at that job. It was new and just merely the beginning. I started selling a simple item at a farmers market. I was such a simple product I had been making for myself and friends for years. Never had thought about selling it. Once I was invited to participate in a market, I started. Overcoming my layoff just came from me believing in myself to make a real business out of what I started to sell. I thought going back to working for a large company where you can get laid off at any point for any reason was just not going to work for me. I had been laid off twice since covid. I thought pursuing my dream of owning my own business was the way to go. Getting laid off gave me the opportunity to have more time in building up this business and with the help of my husband I was able to make these thoughts a reality.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Our Mission -After four years in business, a lot of avenues start to emerge as to where we can place our focus. We took time to redefine our mission. Our personal mission in life is to be in a potion to give back. Our goal for our business is to make high quality, clean-label products. Synergizing these two things helped us realize that providing education needed to be the lynch pin of our mission.
With all the face-to-face experiences we had with our clients, it became clear to us how much we can empower people to know more about their skin AND the ingredients that are found in skincare products. Our focus is on providing accessible information ingredients to allow people to make confident and informed decisions about their skincare choices. With a strong foundation in organic skincare formulation through continuous education, we ensure that our recommendations are backed by scientific knowledge and real expertise, helping our customers choose products that are both effective and safe for your skin.
Future Releases – One of if not the largest motivation for our growing client base is anti-aging skincare. Leaning more and educating more about the natural, and science-based next gen solutions to address these issues is our focus in 2025. We have natural wrinkle repair and anti- wrinkle products that work alongside more advanced peptide formulations on the horizon for 2025. These products can be a game changer, and we are so excited about the launch later this spring.
Participating in over 150 markets annually, alongside my husband Dan, has been more than just “work” for us—it’s been an incredible opportunity that has opened countless doors. We get to connect with people from all walks of life, supporters of small businesses, organizers and other entrepreneurs.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
People skills are crucial to me. Growing up in the motel business helped me develop strong hospitality and interpersonal skills. Many of my jobs from high school to age 33 were customer service-based, teaching me the importance of understanding others’ perspectives in order to resolve issues. These experiences have shaped my professionalism in customer interactions.
Learning from my parents also gave me valuable insight into the business side of running a company. Organizational skills are essential, no matter the business, and the possibilities are endless. I’ve come to realize that things are always changing, and continual learning, making adjustments, and believing in your mission are key to success.
Investing time, as well as money, is vital. As you grow, you’ll find better strategies and ways to become more efficient, ultimately saving time. It’s all part of the process. My advice is simple: start. Experience is necessary to build something that works, and without starting, you can’t gain that experience. Planning is important, but understanding that things won’t always go as planned and being flexible enough to adjust is crucial. Growth comes from adapting to change and finding solutions.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
The most successful people don’t achieve their goals alone. The saying “It takes a village” applies to any business venture. One person can only do so much, and the help and connections we’ve built with individuals from diverse business backgrounds have been instrumental in our growth.
We’re looking for passionate individuals who share an interest in health and wellness—specifically, those who are eager to explore healthier lifestyle choices, not just in skincare, but also in food, cleaning products, and beyond. We’re seeking people who are enthusiastic about living healthier lives and are curious to learn about the wonders of nature. Additionally, we’re interested in partnering with those who are excited about creating content, especially videos, as we continue to build our online presence. Since we can only physically attend so many markets, much of our time has been dedicated to developing our website, learning, and teaching others along the way.
