We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tamara Mitchell-Davis a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tamara, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
Developing confidence and self-esteem has been an ongoing journey for me, one that I believe is crucial for anyone striving to make a meaningful impact. While it’s difficult to pinpoint a single factor that shaped my confidence, there are a few key elements that have played a significant role in my personal development. Those elements include self-awareness, embracing failure, having a growth mindset and taking consistent action.
Cultivating self-awareness has been very instrumental for my growth. Understanding my strengths, values, and passions allowed me to align my actions with my authentic self. This self-awareness has been the foundation upon which I’ve built my confidence, as I now operate from a place of impact and purpose.
Secondly, embracing failure and adopting a growth mindset has been transformative. I realized that setbacks and challenges are not indicators of my worth or abilities; they are opportunities for learning and growth. So when I am faced with obstacles, I am now more eager to view it as a way to challenge and strengthen me versus something designed to “take me off course”.
Lastly, taking consistent action has been crucial. Confidence is not built overnight but through taking small steps forward and celebrating each milestone along the way. By continuously challenging myself, stepping out of my comfort zone, and proving to myself that I can overcome obstacles, my confidence has steadily grown.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
As a book and business coach, my primary focus is to help entrepreneurs and leaders write bestselling books, establish their authority, and build profitable businesses. What I find most exciting and special about my work is the transformative impact it has on my clients’ lives and careers.
By guiding individuals through the process of writing and publishing a book, I enable them to share their unique insights, expertise, and stories with a wide audience. This not only establishes them as thought leaders in their respective fields but also opens doors to new opportunities, such as speaking engagements, media features, and collaborations. Watching the transformation and witnessing my clients’ success is incredibly fulfilling.
Furthermore, I am deeply passionate about helping entrepreneurs and leaders grow profitable businesses. I understand the challenges they face in today’s competitive landscape and the importance of building a strong personal brand. By leveraging the power of a well-crafted book and strategic marketing, I assist my clients in positioning themselves as authorities in their industries. This not only attracts their ideal clients but also creates a platform for sustainable growth and long-term success.
What sets my approach apart is the fusion of my expertise in both book writing and business strategy. I combine the art of storytelling with the science of entrepreneurship to help my clients tell their stories that resonate with their target audience, while also integrating effective marketing and business development strategies.
In order to provide additional spaces for learning, support and networking, we host an annual conference in April of each year, Pen to Profit, to bring thought leaders together all connected to books, and business. In 2024, our conference will be held in Jamaica. Visit: www.pentoprofit.live for more information.
In closing, the most exciting aspect of my work is the ability to empower entrepreneurs and leaders to share their knowledge, make a difference in the world, and achieve their goals. By helping them harness the power of their ideas through the medium of a bestselling book, I contribute to their personal growth, professional success, and the positive impact they can have on others.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Reflecting on my journey, I believe the three most impactful qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that have shaped my path are resilience, continuous learning, and intentionally engaging with peers and colleagues.
Here’s my advice for individuals who are early in their journey on how they can develop or improve on these aspects:
Resilience: Developing resilience is crucial because it allows you to bounce back from setbacks and persevere in the face of challenges. To cultivate resilience, embrace failure as an opportunity for growth rather than a reflection of your worth. View obstacles as temporary hurdles and maintain a positive mindset. Seek out experiences that push you out of your comfort zone, as they will strengthen your resilience over time.
Continuous Learning: Committing to lifelong learning is vital in any journey of personal and professional development. Stay curious and open-minded, actively seeking knowledge and skills that align with your goals. Read books, attend workshops and conferences, take online courses, and engage in networking events. Be proactive in expanding your knowledge and expertise. Remember that learning is not limited to formal education—it can come from various sources and experiences.
Also, engage with peers and colleagues who share similar aspirations and can offer different perspectives. Actively participate in communities relevant to your field, whether in-person or online, to foster connections and collaborations. Networking not only provides access to new opportunities but also exposes you to fresh ideas and challenges that fuel growth.
What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
One common challenge that I believe most can identify with is managing time effectively. As a wife, mom, career woman and owner of a my business, balancing multiple responsibilities, projects, and commitments can become overwhelming.
To address this challenge, it’s important to prioritize tasks, set clear goals, and establish a structured schedule. Break down larger projects into smaller, manageable tasks, and allocate dedicated time blocks for specific activities. Embracing productivity tools and techniques, such as time blocking, Pomodoro technique, or task management apps can also help in maximizing efficiency.
