Meet Kabir Mcneely

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kabir Mcneely. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kabir below.

Kabir, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?

I’ve found exposing myself to the work of other artists is one of the best ways to maintain my creative energy. I’m always really energized by seeing great performances from other actors – like watching Jamie Lee Curtis perform that dance sequence in “The Last Showgirl”, was such a game changer for me recently. I think that’s one of the best things an actor can do to learn the craft as well – is to watch movies, tv shows and plays and really watch the performances.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

Acting has not only helped me develop my sense of self, but it’s also helped me develop empathy for others through finding common ground with characters who sometimes, on the surface, are nothing like me. I think storytelling is absolutely magical and I’m always excited to be a part of different projects in any way that I can. I’m especially excited for my upcoming project “Fallaway” – I don’t think I can say too much about it right now, but I will say that I really felt like I was able to sink my teeth into that role.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

I think collaboration, imagination and risk-taking are big ones for me. I think acting inherently comes with a lot of risk, so you have to really believe in yourself and have a wild imagination to get you through all of the tough times.

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?

There’s a Jim Carrey speech which I think every artist should listen to. I used to play it over and over again in my senior year of high school as I would contemplate the best next step. Did I want to go the safe route and pursue a degree in business or marketing or did I want to take a giant leap of faith and pursue a career as an actor? Anyhow, the huge nugget was: “You can fail at what you don’t want, so you might as well take a chance on doing what you love”. I carry that with me every day and with everything I do. And I’m very grateful that I stumbled on that speech when I did. It was meant to be.
