We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tre’prince White-williams. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tre’Prince below.
Tre’Prince, so great to have you with us and thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with the community. So, let’s jump into something that stops so many people from going after their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. We’d love to hear about how you dealt with that and persisted on your path.
Well, growing up, I have always dealt with “nay-sayers and haters”. Most of the times from people I knew personally. But what I’ve learned is, you have to bet on yourself. There will be a lot of people trying to discourage you. Rather it’s out of jealousy or they are afraid for you because you are making a bold move that they did not have the courage to make. We all have a purpose in this world. Some of us have enough courage to explore what that purpose is. And while on that journey, you will experience a lot of negativity that will make you feel discouraged, unworthy , and insufficient. But the only person’s voice that matters is yours. Pursue everything that you can ever dream of in this lifetime because there will always be someone to spread hate or negative comments about you. And that’s because they’ve set an expectation for who you will be and once you exceeded that expectation, you then became a threat. Its easier for people to sit up and talk, then to get up and do. Live your life, which comes from accepting all of who you are. Therefore no one can get in your line of view. In the words of the acclaimed Sheryl Lee Ralph, “People don’t have to like you, people don’t have to love you, people don’t even have to respect you, but when you look in the mirror, you better love what you see!”
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am an Actor and Fashion Architect. My purpose is to create, inspire, and education through visual storytelling, I have always been drawn to the performing arts and having parents who are into fashion. So it’s in my very DNA to create. As a way of coping with my personal traumas, also being an actor has allowed me to adopt characters that will move society forward by telling stories that the audience will connect to and bring out the humanity that’s in all of us. And I gave myself the title of “Fashion Architect” because I realized that I am meticulous about the clothes I wear, from; the shapes, colors, fabrics, and what I want to express in that moment. For me, I see fashion as art. A way to expression what’s in my mind and heart. Bringing it into the physical.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three most important qualities that’s helping me on my journey would be; kindness, resilience, and courage. First and foremost, you have to be kind. Life will become easier and you would find yourself feeling more fulfilled if you would just be kind. Even the most tiniest acts of kindness are filled with magic. Second, resilience. You have to keep moving forward. Everyday will not be a great day and guess what? That does not matter. You have a purpose to fulfill in this world and if you placed bets on yourself, well you better make sure you win. Last and certainly not least, have courage. Courage isn’t being fearless, but being afraid and doing it anyways. Life can be scary at times but I challenge you. Look within yourself and you will see all the things that makes you amazing and that will give you strength to fight through fear every time.
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
The Dream Giver by Bruce Wilkinson. My father gave me this book right before I moved to Atlanta, Ga. I believe he sensed that I was nervous and afraid of the move. I was doubting myself. I didn’t believe in myself as much as a person should who’s moving to a city alone. But once I started reading that book, I felt empowered. This book is about stepping out on faith and not knowing what the journey will bring. I realized in that moment, that anything I want to do in my life, I will need courage.
