We were lucky to catch up with Jenna Mcmicken recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jenna, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
Growing up on a farm while being the oldest child of six brothers, I practically helped raise my younger siblings and learned a lot about responsibility and grit. God has definitely been my source of strength in the hardest times of my life. Becoming a single mom was the hardest hand dealt to me but, the life lessons learned in my younger years through dealing with loss and heartbreak, taught me that I was strong and I could get through whatever life threw at me.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I grew up surrounded by music. My father played piano, my grandmother played piano and from a young age I wanted to be able to reproduce the sounds and feelings associated with hearing them play. As a piano teacher, it is my joy and privilege to instill the love of music and learning to all those I come in contact with no matter the age. I also perform piano and sing at assisted living facilities, churches, dinner Parties etc… music is therapy to my soul. My favorite is seeing the faces light up of the nursing home residence when I play and sing their favorite songs. There are a few who have lost their ability to remember or to communicate, but they can still sing all the words to the songs they grew up with. Music is the last thing in one’s memory bank to go so I gather it must be the most important. I’m excited about expanding my adult student roster and am looking for students who have always wanted to play but never did or who want to brush up on old skills.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Determination Is by far the quality that has helped me pursue my dreams in life. It has helped me get through the hard times and has constantly pushed me to become a better version of myself, never settling for the mundane. If you believe you can do something, you will find a way to make it happen. I learned a long time ago to quit worrying about what others think of me and just focus on the tasks at hand. Piano practice for example, is not always fun but anything worthwhile in life requires hard work and dedication. With dedication and perseverance, the sky is the limit on your potential.
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
In the last year, I’ve doubled my piano studio and have added regular playing/singing gigs to my schedule. God has taken my passion for music and blessed it into a career in which I’m able to juggle work and being a single mom of 2.
