We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Melanie Goff a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Melanie, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
Confidence wasn’t something I just woke up with—it was built over time. For me, it started with embracing who I am, flaws and all, and realizing that my voice—both literally and figuratively—has power. Music became my way of owning my truth, and the more I poured myself into it, the more I found my confidence growing. I’ve always believed that energy is contagious, so when I step into a room as ‘Josie G,’ I bring that fire, that presence, that unshakable vibe. It’s not about being perfect—it’s about being real, feeling the music, and letting that energy flow through everything I do. Confidence, to me, is about trusting yourself, standing tall in your uniqueness, and knowing that nobody can do what you do the way you do it.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am Josie G—singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. Music is not just what I do; it is the core of who I am. My artistry is rooted in deep musical study, as I dedicated three years to formal training, earning an associate degree in music. I was honored to be accepted into prestigious institutions such as Berklee College of Music and Carnegie Mellon, further affirming my commitment to my craft.
Beyond music, I have a diverse background spanning business, project & change management, and a variety of creative disciplines, including painting, graphic design, photography, knitting, and even baking. While I take pride in these skills, music remains my true passion—my chosen medium to connect, inspire, and move people.
What sets my work apart is the immersive experience I strive to create. My upcoming debut album, Set the Vibe, is more than just a collection of songs—it is a sonic journey designed to evoke emotion and energy. To celebrate its release, I am hosting an exclusive Listening Experience at Ziggy’s in Ypsilanti, MI, where attendees can engage with the music in a vibrant and intimate setting. Tickets are now available at www.josiegmusic.com, and supporters who purchase merchandise will receive a discount on admission.
At its heart, my brand is about authenticity, artistry, and connection. Whether through performance, composition, or collaboration, I am committed to crafting moments that resonate. This is just the beginning of an evolving musical journey, and I invite listeners to experience it with me.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, three key qualities have been instrumental in my journey: discipline, adaptability, and emotional intelligence. These have shaped not only my music but also my overall growth as an artist and individual.
1. Discipline: Mastery requires dedication. Studying music for three years and earning my associate degree taught me the importance of structure—consistent practice, theory, and refinement of technique. Beyond music, discipline has helped me balance multiple creative and business ventures. My advice? Treat your craft like a profession before it becomes one. Set goals, create a routine, and commit to continuous learning.
2. Adaptability: The music industry is unpredictable, and versatility is key. As a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, I’ve had to navigate different roles, genres, and creative challenges. My background in business, project & change management, and the arts has given me the flexibility to pivot when necessary. For those starting out: Be open to new opportunities, learn multiple aspects of your industry, and don’t be afraid to evolve.
3. Emotional Intelligence: Music is storytelling, and great artists connect deeply with their audience. Understanding people—their emotions, struggles, and aspirations—has allowed me to create music that resonates. It also helps in networking and collaboration, which are essential for success. To develop this, listen more, observe the world around you, and be intentional in how you communicate and express yourself through your art.
For those just beginning, remember: your journey is uniquely yours. Stay disciplined, embrace change, and lead with authenticity. Growth takes time, but every step forward matters.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Absolutely! Collaboration is at the heart of creativity, and I’m always looking to connect with like-minded artists, producers, musicians, and creatives who are passionate about music and storytelling. I’m especially interested in working with producers who understand the nuances of R&B and soul, instrumentalists who bring unique textures to a sound, and songwriters who value depth and emotion in their lyrics.
Beyond music, I also welcome collaborations with visual artists, videographers, graphic designers, and other creatives who can help elevate the artistic vision behind Set the Vibe and future projects. Whether it’s live performances, songwriting sessions, or creative visuals, I believe in the power of synergy and shared passion to create something truly special.
And speaking of Set the Vibe—it’s available for pre-save now on most streaming platforms! Don’t miss out on being one of the first to experience the album when it drops.
