We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lucy Tetreault. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lucy below.
Hi Lucy, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
Building confidence can be a tricky process, especially when there are so many other talented artists in the world.
I build my confidence by doing things that scare me and push me out of my comfort zone. This is the only way to keep growing. Then after, I take time to affirm myself that I can do new things and this really makes me feel stronger and more confident.
I also do not compare myself to others – comparison is the thief of joy. True confidence comes from embracing our own unique journeys, not from measuring ourselves against others.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I have been DJing for almost 10 years, and doing other arts for my whole life (singing, painting, photography, etc).
The most special part of performing for me is bringing joy to people. It is such a wonderful feeling to see people smiling and dancing and having a fun time. There is a lot of stress in people’s lives, but if I can make them forget their worries and be in the moment, it is very rewarding.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Three things I would recommend to be successful are:
1. Stay true to yourself: Bring your own unique point of view to your work, that is what differentiates you from others.
2. Hone your craft: Make sure you know your craft inside and out. Keep learning and growing.
3. Keep networking & pushing yourself: The best way to grow in your career is to make connections and to meet new people. Don’t be afraid to do new things – even if they don’t work out, at least you can say you tried!
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
The most impactful thing my parents did for me was encouraging me to be myself. For example, even when I went through my teenage angst phase, my Mom would help me sew patches on my clothes or cut my mohawk.
They always encourage us to express ourselves and forge our own path. Why be like anyone else when you can be yourself?
