Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to J-ryze Fonceca. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
J-Ryze, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
Well, I spent three years as a success coach and the whole time… I was homeless.
It doesn’t get much more “imposter syndrome”, than that.
But there were a few perspective shifts that helped me deal with it.
1. I realized that as long as you can provide value, and help someone else go from A to B, nothing else is relevant. Not your age, not your experience, not your resume, not your life circumstances, marital status, nothing.
If you know in your heart, that you can help another human being, you’ve already beaten imposter syndrome. The ball’s in their court whether they want to receive your help or not, yes, but as a value-provider, you can’t be an “imposter.”
2. I realized that we all start as “imposters”, as infants with minimal clear skills, products, or services. Which means every person I admire began as an “imposter.” How did they go beyond such a condition?
They practiced, applied themselves, and took steps forward. And they did so either ignorant of the “imposter” label, or in spite of it.
3. I realized that –and this one’s the best of all– that imposter syndrome is our friend.
Startling, but it really is. I know, I know, most people act like it’s this terrible thing we need to get rid of, but the truth is…
Imposter syndrome exists to help you.
Here’s why: It’s a friendly sign from life. It’s telling you that your self-worth & confidence aren’t where they could be. Sure, it may be a ‘harsh truth’, but that’s what good friends give us, right? And it’s precious information.
Because if you’re aware that your esteem could use some emergency CPR, you can solve it. You can take action. The trick is to stop fighting imposter syndrome, and instead, make it your friend. And then outgrow it. Let’s say you feel like an imposter as a “coach.”
And let’s say it’s because COVID recently hit and you’ve just decided to pivot into a coaching business. You only need a couple of steps to deal with this.
A. Relax, breathe, and accept any feelings of doubt in coaching like they’re old friends.
B. Smile, and apply the best solution around for imposter syndrome.
And what is the best solution for imposter syndrome? It’s to:
“Consistently, persuasively, and generously help others, while gathering testimonials and building your impressive track record.”
It’s that simple to send your friend ‘imposter syndrome’ packing.
Why does this work so well?
Because it’s easy to offer help for free (or heavily discounted.) It doesn’t feel bad or wrong. It feels like you’re doing a valuable favor because you are.
Presumably, you know at least a bit more about coaching than people who’ve never coached or been coached. You can help them.
(If not, you can start with a precursor step, immersing yourself in reading about coaching. Reading isn’t a true experience, but it can and will put you ahead of many others, and will give you something to apply and practice.)
Fact:
People need help, and you’re freely offering help.
It’s an easy yes.
And then, because of reciprocation, they’ll gladly ‘pay’ you with a testimonial.
You can get pages of praise in a week or two by freely helping people if you apply yourself.
And so, what have you done in two weeks?
You’ve helped people like a boss. You’ve gained pages of praise. It’s right there in black-and-white. It’s awe-inspiring to see the impact your coaching has had on people’s lives.
And now if someone implies you’re an imposter, or that you’re not a ‘real’ coach, you laugh!
You point them to your page of testimonials.
You rifle off stories of all the people you’ve helped.
You don’t feel like an imposter, you feel like a pro.
Voila! An easy, fast, clear, simple solution for out-growing imposter syndrome.
Say goodbye to your old friend and blaze a trail in your new fulfilling career.
I’m confident this will help anyone suffering from imposter syndrome.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I usually let others brag for me, but let’s give this a shot.
I’m a brand-boosting, brain-bending rebelpreneur strategist with a razor-sharp focus on branding, mindset, and wisdom in all its forms.
I don’t just build brands… I build people.
And I do it by slicing through illusions, upgrading beliefs, and dropping game-changing insights on those who are ready to hear them.
My story begins when I cruised through the gifted program in high school, at least until I got bored. And despite not attending Uni, York U still gave me a spirit award for my contributions. But degrees and IQ don’t mean sh*t to me, to be honest.
My real education happened during my homeless years in Toronto. My real teachers? A series of brutally hard knocks, failed businesses, and years of poverty.
Life humbled me, stripped me raw, and in return, life’s trials by fire forged something nearly unbreakable, a mind that sees through society’s noise and a heart wired to serve.
That’s why although I tend to serve high-end clients, I don’t just work with them alone.
I uplift the so-called “least” of society too, because I know what it’s like to be at rock bottom. My mission is to significantly raise as many of the 8 billion or so minds on earth as I can. Whether that’s through branding, mental health, spirituality, or some yet-to-be-discovered lane, I’m all in.
I’ve had countless partners and collaborators, each teaching me more about communication, mindset, and human nature than any textbook ever could.
And I’ll share a couple of my proudest transformations. My girlfriend, Cynthia. She went from a depressed, junkie, single mom to a thriving, fulfilled mompreneur. And now? She’s getting healthier, shedding even more excess weight, and stepping into her power.
The other is how I helped Evan Carmichael grow his brand from 1,000 subscribers to over three million in a handful of years.
That’s the kind of impact I live for.
Now, let’s talk about “failure.”
I’ve launched and lost more businesses in 25 years than most people have attempted in a lifetime. Armchair critics might call that “lack of focus” or “lack of commitment.”
They’d be dead wrong.
My parents raised me on excellence, discipline, and keeping my word, which means every failure was pretty soul-crushing, but also that I was determined to learn from them.
Every so-called failure was a high-stakes masterclass in branding, strategy, and resilience.
You don’t get back up from that many knockdowns without an inhuman level of focus and dedication.
For example, I recently pivoted to brand strategy and hit pause on my mental health podcast Eyes Wide Open—after 100 episodes. Why? Because demand for my brand consulting had skyrocketed, and I knew I could leverage those resources to come back even stronger. Both feed each other. Both serve my audience. It’s strategy, not surrender.
People say I have a gift for clarity and condensing wisdom into mind-blowing epiphanies while offering practical solutions… in just a few minutes.
I’ve been called a polymath, a belief ninja, a mindset guru. And I’m beyond grateful for every testimonial that confirms what I already know: My work changes lives.
That said, I’m definitely not for everyone.
I’m like a shot of mindset vodka… strong, unfiltered, and only for those who can handle the burn.
If you want sugar-coated comfort, I’m not that.
If you think you already have all the answers, we won’t vibe.
But if you’re hungry for clarity, want a judgment-free strategic advisor, and need a shot of adrenaline for your mindset and brand—I’m your guy.
P.S. I can play every League of Legends champ decently, rap Eminem’s Godzilla at full speed, have rewritten thousands of beliefs, devoured thousands of books, created thousands of art pieces, and love bouldering.
If any of this resonates, let’s connect.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Great question. The three skills that helped me most are three skills everyone needs, but are usually only taught to “the elites” of the world.
Namely, persuasion, reframing, and love.
I’ll cover them one at a time:
PERSUASION
Persuasion is natural. To sell is human, and we’re all doing it constantly. Even kids are busy selling their parents on their various agendas, whether it be to ‘pick me up’, get a ‘new toy’, or attend a ‘party with friends.’
A salesperson will typically ‘sell’ a customer a product or service. A marketer will typically ‘sell’ leads and prospects on a narrative or call-to-action.
Everyone is selling, and selling is just persuasion.
And whatever you call it, it is insanely important for everyone who wants to achieve any of their dreams.
99% of your dreams will require the aid of other people, and you can either remain bad at persuasion, hoping and wishing you get what you want, with minimal progress, or you can improve your persuasion skills and land that deal, gain those followers, reach that influencer with intentional mastery.
The choice is yours.
I used to make excuses as to why I couldn’t get what I wanted. I used to blame others.
But the truth is, I just sucked at persuasion, as do most people.
The thing is, you don’t need anything special to become persuasive.
A little study, and a lot of practice, that’s it.
Charismatic people and hypnotic seducers have been around since caveman times. If these persuasive personalities throughout history didn’t need ‘cutting edge’ techniques, why would anyone else?
Persuasion is probably the best skill you can have as a member of any society.
I wrote a post on this ages ago, but am still learning and practicing, I implore you to do the same.
Persuasion, learn it, you’ll thank me.
REFRAMING
Reframing is another game-changer that you’ll get so much use out of.
Things happen in our lives daily.
And depending on how you frame them, those things either serve you or hinder you.
Some things seem good, but can actually be bad. Others seem bad, but can actually be good. All of them, though, can be reframed.
There isn’t a single thing that happens that can’t be reframed into something that serves you with a certain perspective shift.
Unfortunately, most people haven’t practiced reframing, so they suck at it.
And what’s worse, many people have a habit of reframing anything and everything into a negative.
All your heroes though, are people who faced countless hardships and unpleasant experiences and found ways to reframe them.
And if you want to experience a great life, that’s a skill you must practice too.
A good first step towards this is to stop ‘knee-jerk’ framing things. Stop labeling things as ‘good’ or ‘bad’ instantly.
The story of the zen farmer may help:
“One day, a farmer’s horse fled to the hills. His neighbors sympathized with him over his bad luck, but the farmer replied, “Maybe.” A week later, the horse returned bringing a herd with him. This time neighbors cheered the farmer on his good luck. “Maybe,” he replied. Next, the farmer’s son was taming one of the wild horses, but fell off it and broke his leg. Everyone said this was terribly bad luck. The farmer’s reaction: “Maybe.” Weeks later, an army marched up and drafted every able-bodied villager they found. Upon seeing the farmer’s son’s broken leg, they let him off. Was that bad luck, or good luck?”
See?
Instead of knee-jerk framing things like the neighbors, be more thoughtful & open-minded like the farmer.
Take it further by intentionally framing things in a way that serves you and turns negatives into positives.
This helped me when I was evicted, homeless, robbed, and jailed. It helped me when I fired my first millionaire. It helped me in my relationships, it helped me with my health. Reframing helps everything, learn it.
LOVE
This is such a complex topic, skill, and practice that I can’t cover it here.
Suffice it to say, you have 50,000-60,000 discrete moments in your day, with a similar number of thoughts and feelings occurring, and offering you a similar number of choices, whether you realize it or not.
And every one of those choices can be made out of fear, or love.
Every choice can be made out of fear-based, egoic, lack-mindedness, or out of loving, divine, abundance-mindedness.
That includes whether you should doom scroll for an extra 60 seconds or not. It includes whether you should take a break and get fresh air, or not. It includes whether you should stay up to work a bit more, or not.
Every. Choice.
Fear or love.
Practice choosing well. Learn the skill of embodying, expressing, and radiating love for self and others, in all you do.
It’s a total game-changer and results in a stream of constant miracles.
And no matter who is reading this, I bet you a constant stream of miracles is something you could absolutely benefit from.
They’re waiting, but only if you get the hang of love.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I love collab’ing with rebelpreneurs: open-minded, highly coachable, ambitious world-changers.
People whose fears are too strong, who resist new ideas, or who get triggered rather than thinking critically, are not a fit.
The people who get the most value from me are usually multi-millionaires who understand the importance of branding & mindset, with the courage to make controversial moves towards their dreams, even if it ruffles the feathers of their teams or current audience.
I provide ridiculous amounts of transformation in an absurdly short time, jaw-dropping value, but only if my client is ready for the ride.
My judgment-free approach has allowed me to work with motivational speakers, artists & musicians, spiritualists, models, OnlyFans girls, (open-minded) Christians, podcasters, stock traders, coders, authors, and so much more.
