Meet Kate Ker

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kate Ker a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Kate, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.

I’ve come to realize that my purpose really lies in two things: storytelling and being a mom. I’ve always had a passion for connecting with people, and through my work, I get to tell stories that highlight what makes individuals and communities special. Whether I’m working on my People of Greenville project, with real estate agents, or small businesses, it’s so fulfilling to share stories that resonate and bring people together.

On the flip side, being a mom is a huge part of who I am. My daughters bring so much joy and inspiration into my life—they motivate me every day to find that balance between work and family. The beauty of it is how these two pieces of my life fit together. Being a mom gives me the drive and perspective I need to do what I love, and my work lets me share the things that truly matter. It’s this combination of storytelling and motherhood that makes me feel like I’m on the right path.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I’m all about telling stories—whether it’s for schools, small businesses, or real estate. Professionally, I focus on creating content that connects people to the heart of what makes a community or business unique. I’ve had the chance to work with organizations like Pitt County Schools and small business owners through projects like People of Greenville. What excites me most is how storytelling can bridge gaps and spark conversations. It’s not just about the message, but how it resonates with people on a deeper level. I believe that when we tell stories well, we help people connect with something that feels real, meaningful, and authentic.

I also love that my work allows me to explore new ways to connect with audiences—whether it’s through social media, videos, or creative campaigns. It’s all about finding new and exciting ways to engage and create a sense of community.

On a personal note, I’m really focused on maintaining that balance between my career and my family. Being a mom is a huge motivator for me, and I think it’s reflected in the work I do. It gives me a sense of purpose that’s grounded in both my professional and personal life.

And as for new things, I’m always looking for opportunities to expand and create more impactful projects. I’ve been getting more into video production, working on creative projects that highlight unique businesses and people, and I’m excited about the potential for upcoming collaborations. It’s all about growth, connection, and telling stories that matter.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Reflecting on my journey, I would say the three most impactful qualities and skills that have shaped my path are storytelling, adaptability, and a deep understanding of community engagement.

Storytelling: From a young age, I’ve always been drawn to the power of storytelling, whether it’s through social media content, video production, or personal conversations. Storytelling has allowed me to connect with people on a deeper level and convey the essence of a message in a relatable and engaging way. It’s something I carry into my work every day, whether it’s for local businesses, real estate agents, or community organizations. My advice to those early in their journey would be to practice storytelling in all aspects of their life, not just professionally, but also personally. Whether it’s sharing your journey or engaging in casual conversations, learning to connect through storytelling is a valuable tool.

Adaptability: The ability to adapt has been crucial in my career. As a digital communications specialist, I’ve worked with a variety of clients, each with their own unique needs, challenges, and industries. Being able to quickly understand the needs of each client and pivot when necessary has allowed me to succeed in diverse projects. My advice to those starting out would be to embrace change and be open to new ideas and technologies. Being adaptable doesn’t just mean being able to switch gears but also being curious and proactive about how you can innovate.

Community Engagement: My passion for community, whether it’s through Pitt County Schools, the Greenville Museum of Art, or supporting local businesses, has played a significant role in my professional life. Building relationships and having a genuine understanding of the communities you serve allows you to create content that resonates. I always try to tap into the unique stories and passions of those I work with. For those beginning their journey, I’d advise them to get involved locally. Volunteer, attend events, and listen to the needs of the people around you. This helps to ground your work in authenticity and builds meaningful connections that can drive success.

Overall, these three qualities – storytelling, adaptability, and community engagement – have been key to my growth and success. My advice to those starting their journey is to embrace curiosity, build relationships, and always look for ways to learn and improve. The journey is just as important as the destination.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?

Every story I’ve filmed, every interview I’ve watched, and every success story I’ve encountered has impacted me in meaningful ways. I’m always on the lookout for inspiration, motivation, and wisdom from others, learning from the people around me and constantly being inspired by them. But I’m also driven by the desire to write my own story and inspire my daughters along the way.
