Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lane Wallace. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Lane, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
Experimentation leads to innovation. For me, the key to staying creative is to constantly be experimenting. Be observant of your environment and draw inspiration from personal experiences, the experiences of others, and art that speaks to you. Creativity thrives with time. It’s not something that can be forced or put under a time crunch. As soon as you are aimlessly searching for inspiration is the moment when you should step away from it all and let ideas find you. It’s like fishing. You throw a line into the universe and allow the idea to hook itself. You can choose to reel it in and make something of it, or maybe it’s not that ideas time to come to fruition and you let it go to come back to later. Just always write your ideas down so that you know to revisit the idea.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I have always been interested in art and film since I was young. I was constantly drawing and making short films with my sister. Like many other kids I was obsessed with superhero movies and in turn that peaked my interest in visual effects. At the age of 13 I convinced my parents to buy me a laptop where I installed a 3D software called Blender. I went into it with the expectation that I would be able to create Hollywood level effects for my short films, and I quickly realized that wasn’t going to be the case.
Using YouTube as my primary source of information, I set out to learn the ins and outs of creating 3D graphics, no longer interested in traditional live action visual effects, I was deep into 3D art and animation. Still very much an ammeter, I began posting Blender tutorials on my own YouTube channel in 2019 to give back to the community and show off what I had achieved. Growing my channel was initially a very slow process, but I have since amassed over 28k subscribers and over 2.3M views total. I am extremely fortunate to have such an amazing community and it has presented me with several opportunities that I otherwise would not have had.
To further my knowledge and skills, I am now studying for a B.F.A. in Visual Effects at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD).

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Believing in myself, all knowledge is connected, and loving what I do.
Impostor syndrome is something that I know a lot of people struggle with, myself being one of those people. Even when I am having doubts in my abilities, I always remind myself that I am fully capable of accomplishing anything that I put effort into. You almost have to have a delusional self confidence, create a headspace where in the back of your mind you know you are great at what you do and nobody can take that away from you.
I hold a strong belief that all knowledge is connected. Learning something in one field will inevitably cross pollinate into seemingly unrelated aspects of your life. This philosophy has put me in a mindset to constantly experiment. Even if you do not think that an area of knowledge will benefit your life or career, don’t choose to shut it out. Listen to it, read it, watch it, you never know when it will be of use.
Above all else I love what I do. I always have a project in the works because I love creating and telling stories. It’s difficult to find the motivation to do something that you are not in love with. So find the thing that you love and chase it.

Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
My biggest obstacle for the past year or two has been figuring out where I want to go with my career. I think that is one of the reasons I try and take in all of the information that I can. I know that I want to wear several hats as a creative, but navigating ways to actually get those hats can be challenging. I try to be patient and understand that things change. Some of the most successful people in the world didn’t start with the intent of being where they are now, and although that increases uncertainty, it is also comforting.
