We recently connected with Matthew Walsh and have shared our conversation below.
Matthew , we are so happy that our community is going to have a chance to learn more about you, your story and hopefully even take in some of the lessons you’ve learned along the way. Let’s start with self-care – what do you do for self-care and has it had any impact on your effectiveness?
I set a daily routine, I am very much a morning riser no matter what day it is I set my alarm clock for 6:00am. To really build my self-care I workout on the daily wether that be lifting weights or going on a nice jog, its a great way to start the day fresh. Also I’ve come to realize that having a nice clean environment goes along way when it come to completing projects. A clean desk, made bed, breakfast etc.
All of these things have a great impact on how my effectiveness throughout the day.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Hello everyone, My name is Matthew Walsh I’m from Long Island, NY. I am currently enrolled in the Savannah College For Arts & Design, Studying Film & Television with a minor in cinematography. I am a young up in coming filmmaker, my main focus in filmmaking is cinematography, I love everything about it the lighting aspect working with the camera set up. I also like to directed, I recently wrote & directed my first film called “The IEP Kid” the film has been nominated for multiple awards around the world and has won two category’s. Why I love to created? well, I want to connect with people through film, I want my films to really touch the hearts of the audience and make them feel what the characters are feeling. I like to write my films based off of experiences I’ve gone through, my newest film I am writing about tells the story of the amazing relationship and impact a grandfather has on his grandson. Throughout the story the grandfather spends the day with his grandson and takes him around the city he grew up in, he shares old memories and wisdom to the young boy.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Three qualities or skills that were most impactful throughout my journey have to been. 1. Perseverance, throughout my journey I’ve ran into many difficult challenges, if you want something that you’ve never had, you have to do something you’ve never done. when doing so it will be difficult because you’ve never done it, you must persevere through the new challenges to get to where you’ve dreamed of being. 2. Confidence, you can have to worst Idea ever but if you’re confident about it, it will become the best idea. If you have a vision about something you must not lose the vision, you might lose people and that’s alright because you’ll eventually find the people with the same vision. 3. Courage, you must break out of your comfort zone and do things that you’ve never done before, that’s what’s going to make you grow and expand. It might be scary in the beginning but if what you’re working towards is challenging, it will be so rewarding when you finally get to the top.

Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?
Having your Strengths is amazing, however you’d be so much stronger if you invested time and effort on improving the areas you aren’t as strong in. My strengths are Cinematography and directing, the areas I’m not as strong in are like sound mixing & editing, if I invest my time to become better in those areas it would make me a better director/cinematography. It would also build a better relationship with the people in those positions.
