We recently connected with Eva Chau and have shared our conversation below.
Eva, thank you so much for making time for us. We’ve always admired your ability to take risks and so maybe we can kick things off with a discussion around how you developed your ability to take and bear risk?
I’ve always been a dreamer, and I’ve always loved planning my dreams but with that I would stay a lot in my head and not act on them. When I saw the time was passing and all the things I wanted to do, despite remaining the same, weren’t happening I noticed I was all talk and no action. I took a step back and realised that my fear of putting myself out there, my insecurities and the thought of only wanting to show the world something when it was perfect for me (which never happened) were holding me back and the only thing I was losing was the chance to make my dreams come true. So I took the first step, I put myself out there, despite my insecurities, and realised that showing up was more important than being perfect. We grow and we learn, but we can only do that if we take the first step, if we put ourselves out there to chase our dreams and take the risk.
One of my favourite quotes is something along the lines of: In 20 years, when we look back, we won’t regret the things we did, but the things we didn’t do.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m a romance author who loves to swoon readers with my character-driven stories, seasoned with a hint of open-door spice. My books often have a lighthearted romance but touch some heavy topics while I strive to make the characters relatable, both with their struggles as with their personalities, so readers can connect with them and feel less lonely in the world.
I’m a dreamer and a romantic who wants to spread love and joy through my words. Be a safe space for my readers to come and not be afraid to be vulnerable.
I already have two books out; Hope, my debut, and Modern Pen Pals. Both contemporary romances, where the first is new adult and the second adult. I’m writing my third, to be released this year, and have a lot more stories yeat to come I’ve already started to work on.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
When it comes to writing, the best way to improve is by reading a lot and writing a lot. It’s a journey but with every book a person improves, so don’t be afraid of starting and know that you can always edit later!
As a romance author my best advice is to write from the heart and be true to yourself. Readers can sense that and the best stories are the ones when you’re writing and you just want to keep going because you love it so much.

What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
My mentality. I’ve been working on having a stronger and more positive mentality and I feel so much better already.
The last few years have been tough and I’ve felt very overwhelmed and anytime that happened I would freeze and be unable to do what I love the most: writing. It took me a while, and a big reality check that stress is a serious thing and mental health is one of the most important factors in our lives and we need to take care of it. Now whenever I feel overwhelmed I breathe, let myself feel what I need and then break down why I’m feeling like that and what will help me relax. If it’s a big to-do list I’ll work to break down the tasks. If it’s the grand picture of all my future projects I focus on the smaller picture and go step by step, asking myself what do I need to do today to help me get there. I have the goal in mind at all times, but I don’t let the weight of it crash me while I’m still walking towards it.
Focusing more about the journey and less about the destination has helped me stay on track and take better care of myself.
And always remembering that consistency is better than perfection! Anything is better than nothing.
