Meet Safiyyah Abdulrahim

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Safiyyah Abdulrahim. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Safiyyah, really appreciate you joining us to talk about a really relevant, albeit unfortunate topic – layoffs and getting fired. Can you talk to us about your experience and how you overcame being let go?

I’m actually currently still in the situation, however I’m just taking everyday by day! I still get up every morning and take my children to their bus stops we walk together! I try and make sure my daughter gets to stay active in her School activities during this time; to make sure she stays as focused as possible… I work volunteer hours at the Goodwill, I’m building up my client list at the salon, while working on my Tshirt brand. These things are helping me overcome the termination! I also have decided to start the process for purchasing a home! I’m completely ready for stability I just want to stay focused on that! Keeping busy is what helps me overcome challenges like this

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I’m a single mother of three beautiful children! I’m a college drop out from CAU, Clark Atlanta University. However I created a women’s tee shirt Brand while attending CAU… Also a Cosmetologist currently in Las Vegas, NV. Our Brand FIAFILINE has featured in multiple fashion shows in Indianapolis, Chicago, and NYC just to name a few! I was a Union Organizer; and also a member of The Home Care Worker Employment Standards Board where we fought for wage increases, and other benefits for home care workers in the state of Nevada. At FIAFILINE, we our currently updating our business plan, and website to scale our Brand and to stock up on our inventory! We want to be able to have a Brand that is interactive with our clients as well as give you a luxury high end apparel experience. Our goal is to have a foundation that will help assist single mothers of the black and brown communities to develop skills that will facilitate financial freedom. We have up and coming fashion shows in May, 2025/ Ely, NV; and in June/ Las Vegas, NV !

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Hair school/Cosmetology school saved me! without this omg life would be so miserable… Also my dad taught me a lot about doing hair as well, like cutting techniques, styling techniques, and shampooing and setting, and product knowledge too! Just being in tune with the natural talents you have like I was naturally attracted to sewing and designing so taking sewing classes in school and just getting more outside knowledge from other experts help! Being able to talk and speak up- networking is the key to success; you never know who maybe able to help you move along in your journey when you get out there! Never judge a book by its cover!

Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?

Our ideal client is a non conservative woman, a mother that likes to/afford to travel, and likes good music/ concerts! A woman that Like to eat good food/restaurants, women that love to shop at high end boutiques and hang out with family! A woman business owner that’s into art and fashion age 25-45. A woman that loves her community!
