We were lucky to catch up with Jeff Szafarski recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jeff, so great to have you with us and thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with the community. So, let’s jump into something that stops so many people from going after their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. We’d love to hear about how you dealt with that and persisted on your path.
I have frequently encountered individuals who questioned my capabilities, dismissed my concepts, and attempted to hinder my progress. These experiences have fueled my determination to challenge and revolutionize the whiskey industry. Similar to many others, I have been overlooked for promotions within the corporate sphere and discarded by former business associates. These memories serve as a constant motivation as I continue to persist and succeed in one of the most challenging and competitive industries.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
In 2015, I embarked on my journey in the alcohol industry, aiming to open a craft brewery in Los Angeles. Like many, my passion for homebrewing and business led me to this venture. I partnered with individuals who seemed aligned with my vision, but they lacked the business acumen, financial resources, and connections to bring it to fruition.
Despite their shortcomings, I saw this as my chance to build a business from the ground up. I spent the next couple of years leading the fundraising efforts, including developing the business plan and pitching to investors. I also managed the company’s finances and oversaw various back-office functions. In 2017, we celebrated the brewery’s opening.
However, I quickly learned a valuable lesson about choosing business partners wisely. Once operational, my partners turned against me, attempting to seize control of the business. Frustrated and disappointed, I sold my ownership stake in 2018 and started planning my next move.
Reflecting on my experience, I realized I wanted to start another business independently, maintaining control to ensure its success. I decided to stay in the alcohol industry, leveraging the knowledge I had gained. While the craft beer scene was declining, I saw an opportunity in the spirits market. Despite high barriers to entry and fierce competition, the potential for financial gain was immense.
After exploring different concepts and brands, I launched Bucked Up Whiskey in 2021. Positioned as a wild, late-night, party whiskey, it contrasted with the established brands. Our most successful product, Bucked Up Churro Whiskey, is the world’s first churro-flavored whiskey, capturing the essence of California and gaining immense popularity.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Essential in business is being fearless and unafraid of failure. You will inevitably make mistakes, but you can learn from them and continue moving forward. If you believe in yourself and your idea, seize the opportunity, as it may not come again. It’s better to fail than to never have tried.
Problem-solving and creativity are also crucial. Creativity in business extends beyond artistic ability—the best business leaders consistently find creative solutions to the problems they face.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
